Spoiled meat and the like causes food poisoning. Toffee and nuts are nothing to get excited about. They go stale and taste bad. Check your dates before you purchase and remember - if it sounds like too good of a deal, there must be a good reason for it.

Well, I'd be really p*ssed if that happened to me. I hope you get some good coupons to (at least) help get the bad taste out. Good luck! Inexcusable, IMHO.

I bought some expired cereal at RCSS in metro Vancouver last year. As I was leaving the check-out, I noticed it so I headed over to customer service. They were out of stock on the small sized boxes I had purchased, so they apologized and gave me large boxes as replacements. Expired food can happen at any store and I was actually quite impressed with the way RCSS handled it in my case. I think that if you go back to the store and calmly explain what happened to the manager, you will get a good response.

It was clearance, what are you expecting? I agree with GoJays.
It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.

I always check the dates on things I buy especially when buying from the clearance section. I know clearance section is not just for expiring foods but often it is. I doubt the store intentionally was selling the expired products, probably just got overlooked. It happens. I used to work in retail, part of my job was checking the food on the shelf for expiries,( well not really I was on cash, did it myself when the store was slow) I missed some things, it happens. I did find that once things went to the clearance section they were not checked that often anymore. Not sure why exactly that is, I know from my experience the clearance section was too far from the cash so I couldn't check it without getting in trouble.

The candies may not taste good anymore but they are fine past the expiration date (most dried goods are). I'd just bring it back to the store and exchange. I found expired stuffs on the shelves all the time at different stores, usually I'd tell someone working in the store if I am not in a hurry.

I know there are things in my pantry that are expired but I still use them. The best before date is just a guideline to advise you that it's flavour and consistency is at it's before before the date shown. It doesn't mean that it's extremely harmful to consume. I'm not sure I'd be making a huge stink about it. I would return it to the store you bought it from and ask for a refund. Some chocolate is good for up to 10 years.
You may have gotten a stomach ache from eating a lot of chocolate all at once. I know it happens to me but I foolishly still do it.
I would also suggest letting the store manager at that location aware of it and let him or her make it right for you. We don't always have to run to head office and complain. They just send your complaint to the store manager anyway. Why not skip that step unless you are looking for some big compensation then you probably have to deal with head office.Last edited by CrazyQT; Sun, Jan 26th, 2014 at 01:14 PM.

Wow that's terrible. It is absolutely unacceptable to sell expired goods even if it's on clearance. This hurts the image of the brand, not just the store. Big brands like Hershey take this stuff very seriously since the competition is so high for chocolates, thus they do not want anything to hurt their image. I would definitely also contact Hershey to let them know that RCSS is selling expired Hershey products.
