Shape Study by the Child Language and Math Lab at WLU

PARTICIPATE IN INNOVATIVE NEW RESEARCH FROM THE CHILD LANGUAGE AND MATH LAB AT WLU AND RECEIVE A TIM HORTON’S GIFT CARD!!

You and your child are invited to participate in a study about children’s mathematics and language development. We are currently recruiting children between the ages of 24 to 30 months and their parents. If you have a child in this age range, we’d like to invite you to participate in this study.

What is the study like?
Our study is divided into two parts. The first part is an online questionnaire that you will complete at home, and will take approximately one hour. These questions will be about your child’s use of vocabulary, grammar and sentences. For the second part of our study, you and your child will visit us at our lab to watch a short 4 minute video on three laptops showing animated shapes. You will be in the same room at all times. After the video, your child will be invited to play a math game and a learning activity. The total length of this visit will be approximately one hour.

Compensation
You and your child will be given a Tim Horton’s gift card with a value of $10 for coming to the lab to participate in the study.

Confidentiality
Only Dr. Joanne Lee, Dr. Donna Kotsopoulos and their research assistants will have access to the raw data (videotapes, coding sheets, and demographics form). All videotapes and signed forms will be kept in a locked cabinet in Dr. Lee’s lab at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Feedback
An interim letter will be sent out annually to keep you updated on the progress of this study. These letters will also be available for viewing on the Laurier Child Language and Math Lab webpage. Your child’s data would only be reported as a group mean should any publications arise from this research such as presentations and journal articles.
