I tried to do something like this and was refused at the checkout

It's an interesting one. Technically speaking, you could get 20% without having an Optimum card - as it doesn't specify 20% off for Optimum card holders - just 20x the Optimum points (in which case you would have to have the card). So it means it's not really an Optimum promotion.
So as long as the Wii U is regular price, and is $95 AFTER your redemptions, with 20% off you're still at $76 - which means you should qualify for 18,500 points - since you've met all the requirements.
But of course, like you said torontogal12, this is one of the times where it is completely up to the cashier.
If you're nice when they refuse, you could always ask them to scan your points coupon anyways (after they've done the 20%) off and let HQ decide if you should get the points or not - as the points aren't awarded until March 14th. But it doesn't mean they'll agree.
