Hi everyone!
My son is in the process if getting a hearing air due to having severe unilateral hearing loss.
Anyways I just did a google search on hearing air clips and was wondering if anyone know where if get one.
Also does anyone have any experience with having a young toddler (18 mos in Sunday) wearing a hearing aid?
I don't know anyone who's child has had hearing loss so I thought I'd Ask here

I have worked with young children who need to wear hearing aids or glasses. Generally if children can see and hear better they will keep them in or on. Your audiologist or speech therapist should be able to advise you where to get a clip. The most important thing is checking the batteries regularly to make sure they are still working and being firm and consistent about wearing them-your professional can guide you in this. Kind of like riding in the car-being in your car seat and being buckled up are non negotiable. Same with getting dressed in the morning-putting in the aid is part of getting dressed. Give lots of positive feedback to your child as they adjust to keeping it in and if they take it out then calmly and matter of factly keep putting it back in as many times as it takes! If your child is very stubborn about keeping it in the audiologist/speech therapist can advise you. Good luck and it will really help your son or daughter in this critical period of learning to speak and understand if he/she hears well.
Also there may be another parent in your area with a child wearing hearing aids that would be willing to chat with you and answer your questions. Ask your professional if a parent or parent group exists that you can connect with locally or online.
I'm going to follow this post. My son (10 months) has diminished hearing in one ear due to fluid. He has had this since birth and we go see pediatric ear nose and throat specialist soon.
if its caused by fluid in the ear they may put a tube in surgically to help drain the ear. this also helps clear up and prevents ear infections. if that's the case you likely wont need any kind of hearing aid.Quote:

Fluid takes awhile to clear up. All the research has shown that benadryl and antihistamines don't work for fluid. It seemed like an awesome idea, but the research has never really shown the benefit. So don't worry, you didn't clear it up overnight.Quote:

Oh I know fluid doesn't clear up overnight. We gave him the meds because he was all stuffed up and had a bit of a rash on his belly(cousin a nurse and gave us the benadryl) just a side effect of it was his hearing improved for a few hours after taking it. I have noticed quite a difference in his hearing from 1 ear to the other. I put the phone with his grandma to his bad ear and he wants nothing to do with it as if its just an annoyance. Put it to the good ear and he is all smilesQuote:

I'm guessing the audiologist did his hearing test in soundfield. Soundfield won't detect whether one ear works better than another. But there are ways to know if you want before making a decision about tubes. Whether DPOAEs are present in both ears (a test that looks at the mechanics of the inner ear hair cells). Whether his tympanograms (measure of his eardrum movement) are normal. And they can try try testing his hearing with headphones/inserts.
We got approved for a grant for Matt's hearing aid his apt is Is Thurs. Next wk. I hope he'll co-operate
I thought under the infant hearing program in BC they were covered for their 1st hearing aid and all the batteries, ect... for the first 3yrs?Quote:

When we found out we didn't qualify at all. Because he's unilateral and can still hear in his good ear ( perfect hearing).
But apparently they changed something in the program and now we qualify for it.
That's what my audiologist told me...
That's sorta ridiculous that unilateral HL didn't qualify before. All the research out there says that unilateral hearing impaired kids are at risk of doing substantially poorer than their hearing peers in school. I should probably be quiet now or I may end off going on a soap box style tangent. ;)Quote:
