Had a Subway employee in North Dakota yesterday insist that I call the white cheese slices "American Cheese" when ordering sandwiches. The thing is, I was ordering three sandwiches -- and she corrected me as I ordered every one. She wouldn't accept "white cheese slices," "white cheddar," "processed cheese" or "the white cheese" or "the same as the last one."
Why would Americans insist on associating their country with processed cheese slices?
To make matters worse, we went to a Mexican restaurant for supper, and my veggie burrito with "queso blanco" was really covered in two "American Cheese" slices that still held their square shape and had a smooth plastic-like sheen on the surface. The Subway worker must have a second job in the kitchen of the Mexican restaurant! She must call French fries "Freedom Fries" as well! This thread is currently associated with: Subway

Ick, I don't mind processed cheese in sandwiches (or grilled cheese), but I wouldn't be able to stand it in a burrito - that has to actually be cheese.
I've noticed they are very big on their "American cheese" when I'm watching cooking shows, or things like that. I agree, it's not something I'd want my country to be associated with.
So weird that she kept insisting that you call it "American cheese". I always call it white cheese myself!

Any Subway that I've been to in Canada has called it American cheese, doesn't bother me. I usually opt out anyway as I don't care for cheese on my sandwiches.

I have stopped buying processed sliced cheese, and have started buying real? cheeses...I agree with luckbealady, I can't believe it when chefs or restaurants use processed sliced cheeses, I know it's cheaper but I still would prefer the real thing, and what ever you're cooking tastes better!

I have loved Subway for a long time, and started going going back when there was only 1 cheese offered (I think so, anyway. Or at least before they started asking what kind of cheese you want, and instead just asked if you want cheese). When they started asking what kind of cheese I wanted, I would just say "the regular cheese". Well, when I went to Subway in the US and said that, they looked at me like I was speaking another language, so I had to get used to saying "American"

Speaking as a dual citizen, white processed cheese slices are NOT American cheese. Those orange processed slices could be called American cheese, sad but true.
The employee at the Subway was not only wrong, she was rude. What other cheese could you mean? Do they have a counter-full of different white processed cheese for you to pick? I doubt it!

I also thought that the kraft singles red slimy stuff was "American cheese."
I think it's just a stubborn employee insisting she is right.
Whenever I ordered in the US, they don't even ask if I want cheese. The white stuff just gets put on it.Apply every possible promo code to your cart, at every store that you visit (and get points for cash back on top of that?). It's sweet and easy with HONEY.
