We have moved to a new home with a small deck and tiny garden. Behind this is a row of cedars on our neighbour's property. There is single bumblebee which spends it's day hovering over the steps to our deck/garden. It is not aggressive when we go out there, but it doesn't go away. It just hovers there and very infrequently visits our hanging basket. I have never seen this kind of behaviour. Any ideas?

Might be a carpenter bee ..... no stinger, but he is there to guard the nest, if you approach the nest it will get right in your face .. I have them at (in?)my shed. Oh, I should ask .. is it black and yellow with more black than yellow ? I thought it regular bee also at first .. I don't know if any of the others have stingers but the guard doesn't.
The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!
I have nothing to do today and hope to be half done by noon.

Yes, newb, I think you're right. I googled it. But, if it's a "carpenter" bee, should I "bee" worried about damage to the wood in the porch?

I looked it up and it looks like We've got a bit of hunting to do to find their tunnel/next. BTW a piece of "did-I-really-want-to-know-that" information- Carpenter Bee poop is yellow.

hmmm..it say's they also pollenate plants just like normal bee's...kind of sucks to have to kill a beneficial insect.
It says they they don't eat the wood...just burrow in it and don't cause any structural damage, unless there's a tonne of them drilling holes in the same general area it could weaken the wood.
Did you know they also come in blue??
