Welcome home Lizzie, that delay would have freaked me out too.
SA: Sometimes you need to do what is best for you and based on your stories about your Nanny that seems right. I am sure if you take the mom to be aside and tell her why you can’t join the share shower she will not only understand, but appreciate your reasoning.
We are just about ready to go back to school, busy few days ahead. But I was pleased to get the oldest his gym shoes ($100. Regular price) for 12.00 I have a Sears MC that I never use but several years ago I bought a new stove and received a lot of points, so we used them up to pay for shoes. They were on sale as both kids know we don’t ever buy clothing at regular price.
The new dilemma is my teens desire for a phone. He turns 14 soon and until high school was on the horizon he has never cared about one. I am torn. I don’t want the extra cost (he will have to pay half from his allowance), but I get where he is coming from. Sort of debating this as his bday gift. My plan would be we pay half the cost he pays the other (35.00 a month with no data) and at 16 he has to pay it all. My brother still pays for both his kids phones at 16 and 19 and I don’t think that teaches them anything. So ladies what would you do? Cost is not the issue as DH and I can afford the added cost to the budget. It really is a case of everyone else has one and we live in Oakville so he is most likely not kidding when he says this.
Lol Coupon Girl: I think you are less than 10 yrs older than me if I recall. My boys turn 11 and 14 in the next 2 weeks. When my oldest is 32 I will be 65…yikes. The time does just seem to rush by.
My mom said she felt older when I turned 40 (she is 65 and I am 47)
Lizzie, glad to hear your mom is doing so well. As for vacation we get 2 weeks at Christmas when the whole company shuts down. A few times I thought about taking a a couple days here or there but in all honesty it is not worth it for me because I would come back to piles upon piles on my desk. Plus the other two people in my department have been dealing with stuff and needing to take time off so whenever I think about taking a day here or there one of them has time off in the same area which would really put us behind.
I am trying to find time to relax but it is not easy, I think it is time for me and Mom to have another talk. I am trying really hard to understand she is always in pain and frustrated but it is really hard to work all day and keep up with someone who has been home all day and is able to find a way to do things like make jam but not clean up after it. I just always feel so guilty, knowing there is so much to be done and I did not get anything done (like last night when I was not feeling well). More than anything I just wish we could get the house in order so atleast than the small stuff won't be so big. Most of the time my own mind is my own worst enemy, I am a self admitted worrier.
Lilo in our family the rule for me was once I started driving I had to have a cell phone and pay for it myself. My siblings who lived with my Dad got one once they entered high school and it was paid for but they had limited functions.
As for who pays for what that is always tricky, I started working when I was 15 and paid for a lot myself but on the flip side of that I hate to part with my money so a lot of times I would go without. But in all honesty I do not remember really having conversations with my mom on this, it just kind of happened, I wanted it I had to pay for it.
SA- You only take the 2 weeks at Christmas off for vacation per year? No wonder you are tired. That is crazy. I get the 2 weeks off at Christmas plus 7 weeks during the year that I choose (sometimes I just take days here and there) And no one does my work when I'm gone so it is always there waiting for me but C'est la vie!
Welcome home Lizzie. Glad you enjoyed your trip.
Ashley it`s taken a lot of years but I finally learned that you can`t please everyone else so do what is best for you.
coupon girl my mom was almost 41 years older than me so when I turned 40 she was almost 81.
At 13 or 14 we got our daughter an Ipod as a gift so she could text from home and public places with WIFI and then use her computer at home-but no monthly fee. Once she turned 15 we permitted her to get the cell phone for working and high school but she has to pay for it out of her monthly allowance/babysitting/summer earnings. We would not pay 35 a month for ourselves-my husband and I share one emergency use phone for $10 permonth since we are mostly home anyway( and we would lend it to her when she went out-of course it wasn't cool and didn't text but we don't care). When we travel we Skype which is free. However I think DD has learned a valuable lesson paying approx 250 for a new phone( plus 35 per month not on a contract) and then having it fall in the toilet in Germany and stop working( in less than 3 months) and have it confiscated at customs yesterday( who knew). Lets see how eager she is to run out and buy the same replacement from her prescious summer earnings-I notice she is using her Ipod and computer today. I am a believer in giving a set amount for clothes, school lunches, gifts etc and letting them learn to manage it-but there is no more mid month when it runs out. She has 1,000 in savings from her summer job and we are encouraging her to save some of that for a future goal and for an emergency fund and live within her budget or earn a bit extra babysitting etc. Sure she is only 15 but I moved out at 17 and worked and went to school and have managed my own money since then so I think it is a valuable skill for our youth. JMHO
I'm with you on this for sure. We never bought any of our boys cell phones and they purchased their own well after high school. Our 20 year old just bought himself a phone. Our 16 year old says everyone in school has a phone but he doesn't care - but he knows we aren't buying him a phone anyway. I have a cell phone for emergencies as well and they can borrow this phone if need be....probably 'not cool' but it works :-)
Good morning!
lilo, if you are getting a phone, and if he's not working, the way to go would be a barebones phone - something like pay as you go from 7-Eleven. No data so it's treated just as a phone, nothing else.
We got our son one the Christmas after he turned 16 - but he had been working since he was 14. We paid the initial cost for the phone and first payment - after that it was on him. Then he upgraded when he could afford to.
Oh, about kids and parents ages - I'm 53, and son is 22. I was the fifth kid, born when my mom was 35. And I was 35 when she died at 69 years old.
Hope everyone has a great day - mine is pretty fruitful so far, so I'm grateful for that. Hope to do some baking and some veggie prep before noon.

Frugal yes other than time off here or there for appointments, or various little things usually try to atleast be in the office part of the day if I can that is all the time off I take. Sometimes it is not even a full 2 weeks if inventory is not done until Shut Down starts than we lose those days. But the last few years we have done it the weekend before and hopefully it stays that way I know this year we are again Inventory on the 13th, shut down on the 22nd.
To be honest I have never worked a job where I got normal breaks or holidays aside from shut down here. My old job you couldn't even take time off they would not approve your days off as there was no one to cover you. SO I guess I am just used to it.
I think another huge factor in cell phones would be where you live, for me I had to get one once I started driving because I live in the boonies and regularly drove the back roads and they did not like the idea of me driving without one. My siblings was because they were not going to school locally so my step mom & dad wanted them to have them. I do think where you live can be a huge factor when you are not in town.
lilo dh & I don't have a cellphone so our kids don't have cellphones and they won't get a cellphone until they can absorb all the costs as we are not in a position to take on another bill. But if you are financially able to like you mentioned then it might be a good gift. Also the brother you are helping out, is this the one paying for his kids cellphones?
Lizzie so pleased to hear your mum is getting around!!!
Went to Sportchek at lunch to get shoes and a backpack for my oldest that doesn't like shopping. Took pictures of shoes the other day to see what he would like. Was worried I missed the sale (reg $89.99 on for $49.99. Less 20 percent off coupon) but thank gosh they were still on sale. Found a backpack I'm hoping that he will like. Almost done. Will clean out both kids closets this weekend and toss crap/too small and see what they need.
While the boys have been gone with my inlaws, dh & I ate stuff from the freezer that the boys don't like, so we had trout, we had deer meat and tonight's dinner is porc buttons and if they show up for dinner and don't like what's for dinner, they now know the drills (lol)...fend for yourself. My parents are on their way back from out West they have been gone since early May, it is nice to have some distance but I must admit I am looking forward to seeing both. My mom wants to take me to Costco to pick up lunch snacks for the kids her treat, so time will tell as she is not feeling very well and I don't like handouts but since it's for the kids lunches and it's something she wants to do I will consider it. We stopped buying lunch snacks back in April I believe as they are ridiculously over priced, smaller packages (5 granola bars in some boxes) and not very healthy. Logan mentioned that he is really looking forward to starting the boys cooking & baking again so I'll start that again the 2nd week of school. Reposted a few things that I had for sale a few months back and lost track of time (time flies) anyways will see if there is any interest. Wishing everyone a wonderful afternoon.
