A question for all you SCers??

Ok so I posted in the game room about suffering from SP (sleep paralysis) and I am part of the 60% that also get night time hallucinations because of it (yay.. :/ ) I noticed after posting that ppl didn't seem to know what it was a/or never heard of this before.

So this brings me to my question: Do any of you suffer from SP??

So many think they are going through super naturel experiences or they are astral flying when they have SP and simply don't know about it.

I'm looking foward to seeing if I'm not the only one on here!

Hi, Kelly.....the only thing that comes close for me, is that flying dream that many children experience..I had them in my early teens. But I haven't heard about SP....:shrug:...it would,be interesting to find out more....

Sleep paralysis is a term either used to describe the normal paralysis of the body that occurs during REM sleep, or the disorder in which awareness is maintained when the body becomes paralysed when entering sleep (known as hypnogogic paralysis) or remains inappropriately paralysed when awakening (known as hypnopompic paralysis). To differentiate normal sleep paralysis and the disorder, the term for the sleep disorder is often referred to as awareness during sleep paralysis.

The scary part of SP;

Accompanying hallucinations

Many report hallucinations during these episodes. The features of these hallucinations generally vary by individual, but some are more common to the experience than others:

Most common:

* Vividness

* Fear Common

* Sensing a "presence" (often malevolent)

* Pressure/weight on body (especially the chest)

* Impending sense of doom/death

Fairly common:

* Auditory hallucinations (often footsteps or indistinct voices, or pulsing noises)

* Visual hallucinations such as people or shadows walking around the room

Less common:

* Floating sensation (sometimes associated with out-of-body experiences)

* Tactile hallucinations (such as a hand touching or grabbing)

Rare:

* Falling sensation

* Vibration

I have experienced sleep paralysis. It's horrifying, especially when you first experience it and don't know what it is. I have learned to stop sleeping on my back. I try very hard to stay sleeping on my side and it really does help. Yes, a lot of people have no clue what sleep paralysis is, yet so many experience it. It's what happens when your brain awakes but your body is still "asleep". You can't move at all but you are fully awake yet can't open your eyes. Scary stuff !

I had it happen once, and was very scared. I was around 19, so it was a very long time ago.

I'm at the point where I'm stressed out about going to sleep! Nothing can be done about it either.. I started SP attacks at 6 years old and they seem to be getting worse with age.

The hallucinations go from being held down and screamed in the ear (demon voice) to two nights ago a faceless figure 3 cms away from my face. You're stuck there... Trapped in your body :(

Once the attack is over I stay awake and my body trembles for a while.

Have you seen a doctor about it? You could get a referral to a sleep specialist.

kelly25, I am now sure I did actually experience that 2 times many years ago. I just thought it was a nightmare at the time.
The more time passed the more I thought maybe I had imagined it had happened, but no! just as you say....I was trying to get away from someone and NOTHING would move! When I was wide awake finally I looked right at my hand and could not move it!
Of course there was no concern about what I said happened to me other than my DH going " huh? weird ?" at the time, things get brushed off, etc. I sure hope you can find a way to deal with yours, they sound more intense and more frequent than what I had happen.

That sounds horribly frightening, Kelly! I'd be heading to my doctor for answers NOW as well as a naturopath. I can't help but think it has to be something off balance in your body....likely chemical.

So sorry you are going through this. My dh went through this a few years ago it was so bad he was admitted I to the psych ward. I never knew him at the time but know that time in his life was very stressful.
If you are stressed out in your day to day life this might have something to do with it.
Take it easy lessen your daily load, find family and friends to talk to. Us included. I hope you can find away past this. If you arent already seeking professional help I suggest you do so. Good luck.

Well I've been living with SP since I was 6 and unfortunataly there isn't a treatment. Its harmless so docs don't take it very seriously :( The suggestion I've had from my doc is a seeing a sleep specialist. I might have to at one point.

Just last night I jumped out of sleep 3-4 times afraid of that 'just about to sleep' feeling... Move my hand to make sure I'm not having a SP attack.

I think I simply would want to talk the other ppl that suffer from SP ... I not sure why I feel like I need to feel like someone can relate to some of the stuff I go through. Guess I was hoping to find some SCers .. 24% of ppl do have SP but... Where are they!???
