Hey all need some advice.. I been having a lot of bad luck the last bit and I do mean a lot!!! its contestant stress... yesterday my freezer FULL of meat for the month broke! Some food (not just meat) had to be thrown out as it got spoiled, some I put in the ex hubbies freezer with the understanding that he is allowed to eat some. Anyway I am now screwed for food. Me and my current spouse will simply not have enough food for the month and we are very very very very poor. Food bank gives crap for food like canned soups n noodles and such.. we have a good bit of this, and to be honest after eating that kind of stuff for long periods of time it sucks!!!! we ate that kind of stuff for like 3 months and we finally had a little extra to buy some meat and frozen veggies and fries and now most of it is gone! It is so depressing and we don't really have family that can help and the ex hubby also makes little money and won't be able to replace what he will be eating. Its a holiday tuesday so I may not have the landlord send someone till wednesday... Im in Calgary AB anyone know what I can do?

Is this the freezer in your fridge?Does the landlord provide the appliances?I'd ask for a few $$ to help replace the spoiled food, even enough for part of it would help.I had this happen once, and the fridge wasn't repairable,my landlord was "woe is me,I have this big bill for a replacement 2nd hand avocado green 30 yr. old fridge too bad about your food".Maybe you'll have better luck and can get some $$,it won't hurt to ask.

Sorry to hear about your hardship! You can try asking your next door neighbours to see if they can store a few things in their freezer for you. What about the landlord's freezer, can't he/she store a few items for you too? Try to discuss this matter with your landlord...
Check with local Kijiji too, sometimes people have old fridges sitting in their garage, you /landlord may even be able to get a working fridge for free. Just put a wanted ad in Kijiji or ask around.Last edited by Decaf; Sat, Nov 8th, 2014 at 07:38 PM.

is it possible to get a block of ice to put in the freezer and keep the door shut? this should hopefully prevent it from all going off and keep most things cold if not frozen

Is there anything in your rental agreement stated about appliance repairs?

Unless you have insurance for contents (if coverage also covers food), not sure what can be done to replace the lost food except if there is a support service that can step in to provide grocery gift card.2021-Bring on the sunshine, sweets & online shopping.

Do you have renter's insurance? Does the property managers' or landlord's insurance have a clause that covers appliance breakdown (they may have it for water damage from appliances included in the lease, although I don't know if Calgary addresses will still be covered?). Beg your neighbors, cook, dehydrate (can be done in the oven), can or get a $70 Walmart or Home Depot chest freezer if you can scrape together the cash or credit. Do you or your neighbors have a vacuum sealer?
There might be suggestions for canning meat in this thread http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/327844-...-yours-canada/Last edited by Durham Couponer; Sat, Nov 8th, 2014 at 09:09 PM.

If you can locate your freezer make and model, you might be able to get information about any known issues with it.
My hunch is the motor or a circulatory pump is at fault, unless the appliance could be really old? Our former fridge had two incidents during its approx. 21 years of service-the water backed up and leaked and Dad sure was mad about the water damage to the one side of the lower cabinets>Fridge got fixed and had to be moved away from cupboards. About 3-4 yrs ago, sibling figured out something needed to be done with freezer as it was not circulating coolant well. Two years ago, he got a new fridge because the previous one was having difficulty staying cold in the fridge section.2021-Bring on the sunshine, sweets & online shopping.

sounds like your freezer could be replaced by wednesday by your landlord. i've used foodbank(many many years ago) to know that it really is not the ideal situation but sounds like it could tide you over for the week. i mean it's use is to be there for people in emergencies that are low income.
I'm not quite sure what advice your looking for?

those things were all bought with gift money or when i did have money. the iphone was free the burberry thing is second hand but valued at more... the coach bag was bough from the factory store on sale and its the only bag i now have I think it was about 40 bucks? can't remember now had it a long while and I also use it for school... a plastic bag would not hold the weight i need... my suv is gas friendly and my only means of transport. It was also bought for 4000 with the help of family... I refuse transit for many reasons including being sexualy assaulted. But umm thanks..its not like a freezer breaking full of meat happens every day. I have home insurance but not sure I want the insurance hike.

I'm very sorry this happened. These things always seem to happen when we are at our poorest. Maybe you could cook up some of the meat and make some meals to eat all week. Just keep them in your fridge?? If your freezer is replaced in a day or 2 you could always freeze those meals. Just an idea so your meat doesn't have to go to waste or eaten by your ex. Good luck

With my insurance if I need to claim food for a similar situation you are in it does not affect the premium nor do I have to pay a deductible on it.
With all that said though I've never made a claim so I'm just speaking from what my papers say I am entitled to. Luckily last winters ice storm in the GTA only put us out for 3 days and we were just barely okay although all the popsicles had to be tossed eventually.Insert Clever Signature Here
