My family has had a lot of issues with Air Canada. I wasn't impressed with Westjet because we left half hour late only because the flight attendants and pilot just never showed up on time (we all saw them arrive).
All this being said Westjet is definitely the cheapest.
I'm not much help though because I rarely fly and my experience was that we are all sardines and they try to pack you tight as can get. There were three seats and we were all biceps to biceps and thighs to thighs and squished tight like that. Their "first class" only offers something like two inches of leg room extra but no extra width so you aren't touching strangers for 4 hours straight.Insert Clever Signature Here

Best....the one that gets you to your destination on time and safely. Anything else is just fluff...if people don't like flying, there is always sea travel, which most of our ancestors used to get here

For me this question is moot as I choose not to fly any more if there is any way to avoid it. Instead I holiday closer to home. From the wonderful experience it was not too many years ago, flying has become an expensive nightmare. Rushed connections, poor food, disinterested staff, high prices, charges for everything. Airlines must be run by the same people that run Canada Post, doing their best to drive customers away. Cattle are treated better in transit in many respects.

Both West Jet and Air Canada are getting away with charging baggage fees for each checked bag that we never paid in the past. We paid $25 / checked bag on my last trip.
The day before it had been on the radio that the Federal government is taking both West Jet and Air Canada to court over a contract violation of some sort.
So its not just passengers mad at the airlines.

I no longer fly for personal vacations/flights, but when I travel for work related business I always fly Air Canada (internationally and domestic).....I find anytime there is a problem, Air Canada is very quick to find a solution for corporate travelers. All airlines have their share of problems, and given how many flights they do, most times the problems are very minor.

During my business career and personal trips I have always flown AC or *A ... now I can choose which I want but having > 1.5M miles on AC I still tend to choose them at this time anyway. In the end I will choose the one that best suits the trip.
