Thread: Calling at HR professionals....

I recently finished a 3 year Business Admin - HR diploma and have been looking for jobs but have come up empty handed. I live in Ottawa and am not bilingual.
My question is, how did you get your job in HR? I understand it can be very hard to get into, as most small companies don't have much of an HR department.
Any advice appreciated. Thank you! This thread is currently associated with: N/A

most HR jobs require university degree and bilingual would be a definite asset.

I agree with frual50 about being bilingual in the Ottawa area.
OP, did your college have jobs advertised there? That's the easiest place to start.
Also large companies like Loblaws, Walmart, Canadian Tire, Costco, Lowes, Home Depot --> that could be the next place.

I graduated college with both a Marketing and HR diploma. I was told during my internship (with the federal government) that I needed a degree, so I went to University also. I spent almost 18 months looking for work related to HR (while working temp jobs to gain experience). Unfortunately I was never successful and decided to become a stay at home mom.
I'm not looking forward to going back to school in September since most of the people I graduated college with are still working retail.

The Loblaws PC Plus call centre is in the Ottawa area.
www.charityvillage.ca if you want non-profit opportunities.
Did you do co-op placements during your studies or summer jobs in HR? Some HR jobs might require you to travel to various communities if you decide to work for a resource company (a relative of mine did that in her prior job; had a BA and did a couple of HR college courses online-said BAs are "nothing" and specialization is where it's at) and need to do interviews. Do you know what sector you'd like to work in? What about getting the CHRP designation aka more studies?
Do try the public sector job sites. Don't know if you want to try for Ontario public sector jobs-regular or the ones for new graduates.

Some municipalities also belong to regional governments and the latter have their own websites as well.
You are in embassy/consulate land. There could be English speaking jobs but you would be working under their country's employment rules if you worked as a staffer (not sure if HR jobs are part of embassy listings). UK/Australia/other Commonwealth countries.
Arts centres-look at their websites for possible contract positions. I know the Ottawa Tulip Festival is a regular employer for Job Creation positions but one has to be EI eligible in order to apply.
There is a portal for college jobs but it's best to visit each college's hr site directly. Try universities too-harder to get in but also look at student associations, as they run separate staff from colleges/unis.
Hit the libraries too for online or print Scott's directories. See what international corporations are in the city. What major Canadian companies are there and what sector. Work your various networks-keep in touch (profs, classmates, career services, your friends, neighbours, people you see when walking around the city or in the mall, staff at other offices/stores). If you get newsletters via e-mail or have news feeds coming into Twitter, you will have current news that might point you to a prospect or person for information.
As with everything else, transportation/ability to tap other resources (like a car from family if job prospect is not on OC Transpo routes or decent bus service) is going to affect which leads/positions you apply your time towards.Last edited by Ciel; Thu, Jan 15th, 2015 at 10:07 PM.

It occurs to me that there should be HR consulting type businesses in existence-for on-demand HR services or outsourced HR needs? Maybe that is more an extension of temporary employment agencies that specialize in that regard.

This is useful to me as well. I just finished a graduate program in human resources management and am looking for a job.

This HR event is on next week in Toronto. Gryphon-if you are in Toronto, it's probably very competitive yet there are so many different entities (profit, not for profit, international, finance) concentrated in and around Toronto. A few universities and colleges, arts organizations, foundations...
Even Mississauga could be doable if transit from Kipling or Islington leads to the express bus to City Centre terminal (at Square One). But if the jobs are in the business park around the airport, then a car is likely needed.

http://www.seetorontonow.com/About-Us/Jobs.aspx @xox2010 -business administration: did you have taxation courses? Your school probably ran a tax clinic by your program peers with faculty supervising/advising? At Mohawk College, the business admin students run the Fennell Campus tax clinic. Since tax season is coming up, that is another area you can look at for right-now jobs.

I'd like you both to chime in on what the 21st century standard term is for available positions used by human resources staff. These are the ones I see online:
Job Opportunities
Careers
Career Opportunities (seen on college/university hr websites)
Employment
Human Resources
Jobs
Job Postings (usually in unionized work environments)
