it was a fairly new credit card..and it wasn't involved in the original Target security breach..also, I should have explained better my husband gets alerts(e-mails) from the credit card company for international uses or if something looks suspicious from our ordinary purchases...but I'm always careful, I never respond to the e-mails I always call to verify...
That's exactly what happened, they made a $6.00 charge and it was credited back, then they used it for a small purchase at a subway..then they went for the bigger purchases at Target...I think now that Target is closing and they know it's an easy score we will probably be hearing more about this...please use cash if possible..the thieves(hackers) are getting smarter and smarter..look at the Sony and ISIS hacking...It's getting scary out there!!
Speaking as someone who works behind the scenes in retail, when a credit card is compromised and the amount isn't astronomical (I've seen up to $700) the credit card companies don't ask for anything other than a signed copy of the credit card transaction if a pin wasn't used. Since the inception of the chip and tap we have had 90% less calls from credit card companies requesting proof of receipt signatures.
I think they just write it off. It's not worth the time and hassle to investigate minuscule amounts. Now if the amounts were in the thousands of dollars it might be a different story but for small amounts they generally don't investigate.
Glad you got it sorted out before they used it again.
I always call my CC and let them know if I will be travelling out of the province or country and the date frame I will be gone so they don't block my card if they see purchases.
