We have cedar trees that dear seemed to enjoy for winter brunch (breakfast, dinner and between meal and especially night time snacks). You can buy dear repellant, at your local garden centre, but it's pretty expensive. We have found a fix that is free. Your local barber shop or hair salon will generously give you a bag of hair. My wife gets it for us and the stuff she gets is washed hair - works as well as the unwashed variety. We bundle up clumps of hair in old window screen, about the size of large sausages tied at each end with green garden ties, and hang them on our cedars. Since we have been doing this - no dear damage. Works on other plants that dear love too!

Deer don't like human hair. It must be an animal world thing: don't smell like a human or be cast-out of the group. That's why if humans try to rescue an injured bird or animal baby, it's important not to handle the creature with your hands unless they are covered. Mama or papa might smell the human oils and abandon baby.

If you beat an egg white with enough cold water to fill half a spray bottle (sieve it before you pour it in the spray bottle to get rid of any thick bits). Spray on bushes and trees, that works too.
I also bought the deer repellent from Canadian tire it is pricey at $29.99 and pretty gross - the bottle say minimum 17% dried blood, doesn't say what animal it comes from. Smells like a cross between blood and dead fish - smell lasts about an hour then we couldn't smell it any more. It worked!Built Bars 15% off sitewide, free shipping when you spend $25.
