My Mom always used ground pork, rarely ground beef (it's a Hungarian thing ). Burgers, cabbage rolls, spaghetti, etc. There's a dish we make called Fasirt that you might like - it's sort of a cross between hamburger and meatloaf. You can freeze it & reheat it (it's best served fresh, tho) and it travels well. And since Hungarians are typically carnivores, you can eat it hot or cold.

    Fasirt
    1lb ground pork
    1 onion, diced
    1 clove garlic, pureed
    day old buns or bread
    2 eggs
    breadcrumbs
    milk
    salt
    pepper
    paprika
    oil

Soak 1-2 buns (or slices of bread) in milk.
Saute onions in a tablespoon of oil. When translucent, add a dash of paprika, stir and remove from heat and let cool.
Drain buns (squeezing out all milk).
To the pork, add eggs, onions, pureed garlic, salt, & pepper.
Mix thoroughly (it's messy, but it's easier to use your hands than a spoon).
    Roll into balls and flatten.
    Roll in breadcrumbs.
Heat oil & fry the patties in the hot oil.
Serve hot with salad or veggies or potatoes or something called fozelek (sort of like a stew - think mushy veggies ).

Ganger I am glad you and the students were able to release the balloons in your students memory, i think it an important part of the grieving process for kids to do something tangible to show their grief and support.Must have been a difficult week for you.
What a wonderful way to announce your pregnancy..what fun for everyone!

I'm with everyone on the ground pork, we love it.I mix it half and half with ground chicken for tiny meatballs for Italian wedding soup, it makes the chicken a bit less slimy for rolling them and adds lots of flavor, we also use it as a filling for Vietnamese salad rolls!!

Went to Calgary yesterday for my final allergy testing, black ice for the first hour of the drive and in the -20's, mother nature had to throw some heavy fog in for awhile for good measure, got to Calgary and it was sunny and warm, what a difference in temperature in an hour and a half drive. I did the penicillin testing and I am so happy to report I am not allergic, I have thought for 5 years I was allergic because of an itchy rash I got after taking it but it must have been an unlucky coincidence!

I'm on a roll. Kitchen spotless after making eggs etc for breakfast. Carton I paid 44 cents for is gone. Sink is sparkling and dishwasher running. Fridge is cleaned out and bare! Grocery list made but not huge. Just basics really. Now off to clean all bathrooms and empty all garbage bins and then garbage and recycling off to garage. Then load all dirty laundry to the car to start laundry at my moms.

I`d take Paul Gross anytime. Still love to watch reruns of Due South.

@ Granger Really like the idea of releasing balloons. My friends and I had a discussion about memorials after my bil died. A sil bought an angel for his widow instead of flowers. They thought that was a great idea...me not so much. I wouldn`t want to look at something every day that would remind me of the death of someone.

Finished a couple towels this morning. Now I`m working on a pink ruffled afghan that I started last night. Put a huge beef roast in the oven for supper. Will have lots left for sandwiches and beef stew. If I get enough energy when my pain pills kick in I should get the fridge cleaned. It`s needed to be done for ages but something else always took priority. Also should shovel snow but that will probably wait for another day.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be MIAing some days next week as my mother is in the hospital, my dad brought her in on Thursday afternoon, they did bloodwork only to discover she had a heart attack sometime either Thursday or Friday. They are sending her by ambulance to another hospital for test etc and depending will go from there.

I told my dad I will go down for a couple days visit with him and visit with my mom.

Well off to call my brother and see if he has any news as my dad is away for the day attending a wake & funeral for a cousin that was killed on a farming accident, very sad and tragic.

    Wishing everyone a wonderful day

Busy day here. DS#1 leaves for Quebec very early in the morning so we need to pack all his winter gear including skates and skis. Since he was skiing last week all of that was prepared so now it’s the warm clothes as it is much colder there. After it is done we are treating ourselves to either Indian or Thai. Logan is not a fan so it’s the best time to do it. He also needs snacks for the trip & DH received the 6000 points when you spend 20.00 on snacks at SDM so the timing is perfect. I also want to pick up an extra pair of gloves & last week I won a 25.00 sport check gift card so no OOP. My original plan was to give him his dads ski gloves. But then DH pointed out he & Logan are away and skiing this weekend.

Have windows open in kids rooms to air them out before I start the final touches of cleaning/ switching rooms. Brought laundry to my moms and started it! Just sat down for a quick lunch break. Left over chicken lasagna that my honey made for dinner last night. It is so good.

    Good Afternoon Everyone,

Hope everyone who is under the weather is feeling better.

Nancy hope your Mom has a quick and speedy recovery and so sorry to hear about your cousin.

I am back and wow what a week it has been. Good news I am so on the go and going non stop I have zero time to spend any money.

The weather turned my week upside down. I was supposed to be out of town Monday & Tuesday but the weather keep me in town on Monday so I worked out of my regular branch these 2 days as I had appointment Wednesday I needed to be around for. So Wednesday went as planned training the morning appointment at 11:30 than out of town I went. That is where the smooth sailing stopped the drive went well until I was about an hour out and the highway was closed and I had to get off. Took me almost half an hour to get my GPS to find a new route even though I keep telling it we could not get on the highway it was determined we were going on the highway. So had to take all of these back roads, finally got back on the highway but the sun had gone down and everything froze, we never got above 40 and sill if you tried to brake you were slipping and sliding and trying to get going again was hard as you just spun. so my 3 hour drive was almost 5 hours and my nerves were shot by the time I got there. It was not until a couple years ago I really started driving long distances and any form of bad weather keep me in town and now well things happen and you have to go.

We have a bunch of changes going on at work which is going to make things really busy for a bunch of us to get everything sorted out. Turns out over the next 2 weeks a huge chunk of us will be off so all changes will wait until everyone is back and can sort everything out. I was looking forward to getting the training done and getting back in he office but now it looks like we have a ton on our plates and the rest of this month is going to pretty insane. Good news I won't have time to spend money bad news I won't have time for much that does not involve work.

Had another talk with Mom before I went away as another month came up and she had to pay for the storage unit again which did not make her happy. Now that I am away pretty much all progress on the house has stopped. Hopefully she will be re motivated to get back on track as I won't be home much to help.

Trying to get some stuff done today but I must admit my ambition is serious lacking, I am super tired and sore and would love to take a nap but not an option. So far the laundry is done, main dish for my lunch for the week has been made and is in the fridge and most of the veggies for dinner are chopped and ready to cooked. Will have to see what else I can get done today.

Hope everyone has a great day.

thanks everyone for the kind words about my mom, dh will drive me to my parents house on Monday unless something changes. I called and spoke with my mom at the hospital, I called and a friend who was visiting ansered, she kept coughing and weasing and I couldn't really understand what she was saying.

She said she will be transferred by ambulance to another hospital to run tests either on Monday or Tuesday but that has not yet been confirmed and that she will need to have another surgery. I am unsure how she knows about another surgery as she has not had any tests done to my knowledge other than blood work which indicated a heart attack.

My dad and are both wimps so he may not know what exactly is going on as my mom may be keeping some things to herself but again I'm unsure. When I head down I will ask to speak with the nurse or listen in when the doctors visit and hear for myself what is going on.

My mom had a triple bypass last year and has never really recovered, she gets breathless from walking short distances but does not take it easy, she is a gogo type person BUT hopefully she will listen this time.

    Again thanks for your kindness
