Whether you know it as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day, 17 February is the day to gorge on one of the most fattening of breakfast treats.

Commemorating the eve of Lent (40 days and nights of fasting and prayers before Easter), it is a day where one confesses one’s sins and asks God for absolution.

The word Shrove comes from the Old English word Shrive – to confess one’s sins. The first day of Lent is Ash Wednesday, which is marked in the Western Christian Church by services of penitence.

The reason we indulge in pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is because they contain fat, butter and eggs, all of which used to be forbidden during Lent. These days, participants tend to give up less vital dietary ingredients such as chocolate or coffee.

My db and I will go to a Pancake Supper at one of our churches tomorrow. We have a local Shrove Tuesday tradition of jelly filled doughnuts (HUGE) called Pyzanchi (I think) pronounced "poonchki". Our local bakery will have line-ups tomorrow. Hope people don't freeze before they can get inside to buy them. For late-sleepers like me, they are aldo available at RCSS and Sobeys. The Prune-filled ones are the "traditional" kind. (Not my preference, though!)
Now to figure out what i can "give up" for Lent. Couldn't POSSIBLY give up SC!!!

^ I've heard of this tradition, it's not common here, but I see them advertised in the flyers of some bakeries. Here they are called paczki, but I've also read of the pronunciation of the word you wrote.

What is common here all year round are the same thing, but called Bismarcks, usually fruit-filled.

We'll be having our pancakes for supper tonight!

Oh, my hubby makes the best pancakes...scratch, no boxes involved. However....with this bronchitis I don't have an appetite and I just worked too hard on my eating healthy (diet) to blow it by having pancakes. Might as well just apply them directly to my hips.
I don't give any foods up for lent, either.
I feel like such a rebel......

I just watched my mother whip up a batch. She separated the eggs and then proceeded to whip them that way. She added the yolks in with the other wet ingredients, added the dry stuff. And then she folded in the whipped whites. Such a process for a fluffy pancake. I don't eat them, so I am making chicken wings.
