Yes you can really save money with coupons - lots. The best strategy is to combine coupons with sales or reward program.
Here's some examples.
1. Just coupons:
Nestea 12 can boxes have a Get a Free Nestea case coupon. You buy 1 case. $5 + recycling fees
Next time you're shopping you buy another, use your free product coupon. Pay only recycling fees.
Repeat till you have a reasonable stockpile based on what your family or organization you donate to can use.
So let's stay that's 6 cases. And that will last 6 months. You have spent $5 and saved $25 on the next 5 cases.
2. Reward Programs - ie airmiles, Shoppers, Sobeys etc
There are threads on this site where people post how to maximize your points each week when the flyer comes out. For example Operabob on the Airmiles/Safeway thread has posted about the Van Houtte coffee deal.
His store has it on sale for $7.99. Here's what he wrote:
So Tuesday is Safeway and Sobeys customer appreciation day so they offer 10% if you spend $35 or more or extra reward points.Quote:
DOUBLE DIP ALERT:
Van Houtte Coffee is B2G50 this week on sale (looks like $2 off) for $8.99 -$9.99.
The 24 August mail out from AirMiles entitled: Celebrating 20 years with Bonus Offers and prizes!
has a B2G30 on Van Houtte same sizes.
The 50 AMs should be added automatically at the register while the 30 will be entered in by the cashier. Based on previous situations this should be through. So you should get 80 AMs on 2 making it:
$8.99/$4.79 - $9.99/$5.79
$8.09-$3.89 - $8.99/$4.79 on Tuesday
But there's more, cheekysaver posted that there is a $3 printable coupon on the Smart Canucks printable coupons thread.
So on Tuesday - the actual $ the coffee ends up costing is $1.47 / bag.
So let's say you buy 6 again.
Instead of $8.90 * 6 = $53.00 it will cost you $1.47 *6= $8.82
3. Mail In Rebate (MIR) and Sales
Quaker often has a MIR this time of year. It's usually something like buy 5 of these products (lists them) and get $20 gift card. If you shop on a sale day or carefully choose your items, not only will you get them FREE you may also earn a bit of cash.
So if 4x quaker instant oats are $2.50 each = $10 and the Tropicana large juice is $5.99, you'll spend $15.99. You send in your receipt and MIR form following the directions exactly as stated. In a few weeks you'll receive $20 gift card for a grocery store - usually where the offer was valid - Superstore/ExtraFoods/Loblaws ..
So Free Food and $4 your pocket.
----------------------------
Just having a coupon for something doesn't make it a "good deal". Is it something your family will use and use it all up if you stockpile it? Is the price good before the coupon? Does the store offer a reward program so that you can collect bonus points?
It's about maximizing your savings.
