Inspired recently by Rikas backpacks for homeless I started looking into how I can put a challenge out to everyone in the coupon world to use their talents to help others. The Mustard Seed asks for backpacks for winter to help keep homeless men and women safer from the weather.
I am challenging everyone to make one backpack along with myself. Once you have gathered what your able to afford to I will pick it up from you and complete the backpack and deliver them. I do ask you give a full effort to complete one on your own as I can not afford alot of extras. Every year my kids donate what would be their christmas presents to go towards others in need, and after talking with them last night they agreed to help make the homeless have a better and warmer christmas with these backpacks.

I'm not sure I could do a whole one but I will definitely let you know if I have any extra items we won't be using at home, or am able to find a good deal on something to donate!

I'm not sure where I stand on donating for this, just because I donate decent amounts of other things elsewhere. However I do want to mention that a couple of weeks ago Staples had wicked deals on leftover back to school backpacks. I bought my daughter one for $1.50, not the type you'd want for this project (those inner city folks probably wouldn't find a pink child's backpack so useful) but for $10 I got a $35 backpack for myself the the laptop spot and stuff, so they have different backpacks for different prices, it's worth checking out if you don't have a backpack and need to buy one to donate.

I can't participate this year, though I usually do gather stuff for the mustard seed at Christmas. It just isn't going to work this year.
I wanted to mention though that any clothing should be dark or neutral colors. Many don't like to stand out, and high end name brand stuff tends to either get stolen or they get accused of having stolen it. Not so much fun for them.

Winners also has some of their leftover backpacks on sale.
I hope to donate a bunch of stuff to Rika and I am working on my SPCA gift but I hope that everyone has a good time and a lot of people participate. Maybe if you can only donate a few items you can drop them off at BLKROSE so she can use them to fill in any gaps.

Hi Blk-rose,
I will fill a backpack(maybe two!) for your challenge, hope to have it ready for the end of November.
I was at Giant Tiger today and they had a bunch of backpacks on clearance for $3.

I think I have several one load wash samples of different laundry detergents, would that be something beneficial to throw one of each into a backpack? It would give the people something to do a load of laundry with if they can access facilities.
