    Rosh hashanna ( literally first or head of the year) is the Jewish New year, also known as the day of Judgement and the beginning of the ten days of repentance culminating in Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. It is the beginning of the holiday season that ends with Sukkot a few weeks later.

    There are a variety of traditions and customs for Rosh Hashana though many now dispute their origins in Judaism and if they should be followed. Official practices that are not questioned are the blowing of the shofar ( a ram's horn), special prayers, and an emphasis on new beginnings
