In another post, I mentioned possibly buying an Apple computer. However their are things that need to be done this year, roof etc. So I won't be able to afford an Apple.

I currently have a desktop computer (HP) which is half running.

I like the idea of a laptop being portable around the house. I'm wondering if others find them easy to type on? The reason being the front part/extra piece where the mouse is and the keyboard 'behind' it. With a desktop keyboard, there is not that extra piece, your not stretching your hands out as much?

Some people mention desktops are on their way out. It's better to buy a laptop??

Acer, Asus, HP and Toshiba brands. Yay or nay to any of these?

    Thanks!

I have a laptop and I would definitely any day suggest to get one. You really have no strain on your hands and if the mousepad is not working, you can always get a cordless and portable mouse. Desktops don't really allow any portable-ness for business or just around the house; if its set up in the basement, that's where you will always be if you need it.

Before I got an Apple, I used an Acer and they were pretty good. Try reading this article and scroll down to read the rest of them.

I personally have had a Laptop (the same one) for nearly 6.5 years. its an HP. So far i love it. only a few minor problems. i can move it around from one room to another, to print at the printer or have a quiet area etc.
many ppl i know still have desktops. it works for them. they aren't 'connected' to theres as I am mine.
my son just bought a Toshiba, and is having issues with running system. but its easily fixed. i would personally choose an HP myself and a Laptop
hope that helps. im sure you'll receive lots of helpful information. good luck with your choice.

If you want the best bang for your buck, get a used desktop.
If you want the best durability/decent value, get a new desktop
If you want the portability, get a laptop new/used

We too switched from desktop to laptop a few years ago. We used to have an 'office,' a room where the computer was, you'd go there to do your computer stuff. Now we have a child, the laptop is in the living room, we can use it when/where ever. The 'office' is now a spare bedroom/playroom. Our laptop is quite big, so the keyboard is mostly like a regular size. The mouse pad, if I'm typing properly I don't really touch it.

If DH or I have a friend over and want to be in the living room, the other can go upstairs and compute undisturbed. We have wifi, so our laptop, tablet or my phone can be hooked up to it anytime.

At work I have a laptop with a docking station, I often have need to go to meetings and take notes. So most of the time I'm using my regular keyboard and looking at my normal monitor, but in a second I can pop it out and be in a meeting typing on the laptop keyboard. One problem I have with that one is there's a button in the middle of the keyboard near the B that acts as a mouse. I'm forever hitting it by accident and end up on a different line as I'm typing, it drives me nuts! I have yet to figure out how to disable it. Some folks like that thing, I do not!

I've never once had an issue with my Acer laptop that was the fault of Acer. Did that make sense? I've had a couple of problems, but it was the result of outside forces at work, but that's neither here nor there. There is no way that I'd ever look at any brand other than Acer when it comes time to replace this one.

Update... The new laptop worked great. However, I decided that a tablet would fit my needs perfectly. I ended up returning the laptop and recently bought a Google nexus 7 inch tablet. I will post a review when I've used it for awhile. As for the laptop, there was nothing wrong with it. It seemed quite fast.
