Turkeys- Walmart or Save-On Prices Per lb

I just hate how Wally World tries to confuse shoppers with meat offers at price/package vs. price/lb to keep smart shoppers from comparing.

Thanksgiving turkeys are coming up. Here's how Wally World stacks up against Save-On:

Interesting game of one upmanship this week.

Last year while everyone put turkeys on for Thanksgiving around $0.97-$0.99/lb Wally World smoked the competition at $0.87/lb.

This year, not be outdone, Save-On has them at $0.87/lb to match last year's WW offer.

But,

This year WW is not doing price/lb and has one of their very misleading one price/package offer. So I've worked out the prices:

$10 for 3 - 5 KG = $1.52 to $0.91/lb

$15 for 5 - 7 KG = $1.36 - $0.97/lb

$20 for 7 KG and over = $1.30/lb dropping for sizes over 7KG

To match or beat Save-On's $0.87/lb for the 7 KG and over would require buying an 11KG bird or larger.

Easy calculation:

Price divided by KGs X 2.2 (to convert to pounds)

So $10/package becomes $10/(3KG x 2.2) = $10/6.6 = $1.52/lb, $10/(5KG x 2.2) = $10/11 = $0.91, etc.

Wally World isn't always the cheapest! :yikes:

I was just doing this math myself as I was going through the flyers. RCSS is .85/lb for the bird I need (under 11kg). I was almost fooled by the WW price. Hopefully others see your post and make a smarter and cheaper shopping choice.

is this your RCSS West flyer that you are using? I cannot see any turkey prices listed in the RCSS Ont one that was posted here. ( .85 a lb is most definitely a sale price, so congrats. )

gosh! I finally saw the flyer from the West! I see they have a limit of 1 turkey! That would work for us but I am sure some customers would have liked to stock up at that price.

Without a SaveOn here, Wm is the best price here, @ 91-97 cents per pound. In the olden days, we used to stock up when they were around 50 - 60 cents per pound; the grocery stores would cut the bird in half for us so we'd have nice turkey dinners anytime at all. Because of contamination worries, they won't do that anymore....how on earth did we all survive those years? :cheesygrin:

Go through the line more than once or take someone with you. I do that to get a number for local charities.

Argh....I remember a 'method' my friend used last year to get a turkey, albeit very corrupt in my books. He dug through the turkeys at Sobeys, found the heaviest one, and the lightest one, and took the tag off the light one and put it on the heavy one. Definitely not something I would do, but when I asked how how he did it he said the tags are barely even attached to the turkeys. Stores should be weighing ALL turkeys at the cash register to ensure people don't do this.

They have labels stuck on, not tags at mine otherwise I could see plenty of ppl doing it
