The CRTC is giving the cable industry some time to adjust to the new rules, introducing them gradually over the next year and a half before they become mandatory in December 2016.
Service providers will have until March 2016 to offer the $25 basic package.

Got rid of my Cable long back. Just have a OTA - Over The Air antenna . I get 12 Canadian channels and 2 US channels for FREE.
More than enough for me. All are HD crystal clear channels for free.

Its the TERK indoor amplified antenna. I don't get any speciality sports or movie channels, but just the regular network channels.

This is not well known, but Rogers already has a skinny basic cable option for $15.99/month (+ tax) with no contract called Digital Lite. It's not advertised on their website but if you call them and ask for it you can get it. It includes only a few channels, and the big 5 American ones (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and PBS).

    From the Vancouver Sun
"Clearly the most expensive (channels) will always be sports," says Pelletier, president of the Canadian chapter of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing.
"At the end of the day, for sports watchers, their cable bill will probably stay the same or increase, maybe.... In the case of someone who doesn't watch any sports at all, their bill will probably decrease."
There will almost certainly be a thinning of the dial as less-popular channels are forced to shut down, he says.
Conventional thinking is that certain genres will suffer: niche channels with targeted audiences like OutTV, so-called "classic TV" channels dominated by reruns like Deja View, and youth-oriented networks like MTV2 that cater to a generation increasingly drawn to online sources.
But lower ratings don't necessarily mean a channel is doomed, says Shaw Media president Barb Williams, whose stable of 19 specialty channels includes HGTV, Slice, Food Network, IFC and DTour.
Niche channels could have a dedicated audience willing to pay more, she suggests.

You have the $15.99/month package with Rogers? How many channels does it have?

Makes me glad I don't watch sports.

I always hear the same thing when there's a discussion about cutting cable - "I would, but what about sports?"

Funny thing is, I love playing sports and I also love going to live sporting events, I just don't get any pleasure whatsoever out of watching sports on TV nor do I follow any teams. Other guys think I'm weird because of it, but it has saved me a lot of money on cable.
