The Hamilton area’s French Catholic school board is hoping the purchase of land for a new high school on the southeast Mountain will help break an impasse with the province over funding for its construction.
Board chair Melinda Chartrand said trustees took the “extraordinary” step of tapping $5.6 million in reserves to buy a 3.8-hectare property on Broughton Avenue from the Hamilton public board to try to move the project along.

Over the past two years, the school on the Mountain has been trying to get a new high school with facilities that are lacking at the current location, which is a former elementary school.

More news-there could be a Francophone community centre on the property if both the separate and public French school boards have their schools on the same site.

The French Catholic and Public school boards will get a jointly held new high school on the East Mountain. Current expected opening date is 2018.

Catholic board spokesperson Mikale-Andrée Joly said the two sides and ministry have sent in an application for federal funding for the centre after consulting their school communities on what they’d like to see there. She said requested elements include good gyms, community rooms and kitchens.
“That portion is now in Ottawa and we’re waiting for that part,” Joly said. “It’s still very much on the table.”
The new high school is slated to open in 2018 and will replace two existing elementary schools presently used for secondary students – Académie catholique Mère-Teresa on the east Mountain and Georges-P.-Vanier in Westdale.
Joly acknowledged the fall 2018 opening target is an aggressive one.

Conseil scolaire Viamonde is the public school board while Conseil scolaire de district Catholique Centre is the separate school board.
