I'm not sure about this but the bottoms of one of our SS pots was getting a little blackened and I told DH to use oven cleaner on it...worked like a charm! If we can clean SS oven grates, then why not? Try on a little spot first and see what happens. Other than that, perhaps silver cleaner...good luck!

The metal darkens with oxidation. Try a bit of toothpaste in an inconspicuous spot to see if clears off the oxidation spots.
Basically it's a matter of restoring electrons to the kettle with a substance so you get the gleam back. Paste of water and baking soda could also work.

Your kettle takes a beating when you keep it on or near the stove, where it’s exposed to constant splatter and grease. To remove stains, add enough white vinegar to three tablespoons of baking soda to form a thick paste. Apply it with a soft rag or sponge and scrub until the stains disappear, then wipe the kettle with a damp cloth—and store it out of harm’s way.

This is the cleaner we use: http://www.lagostina.ca/html/product...=21&idsubcat=0

New packaging of it looks like this: http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...s7N1KCspTHpOEn

We pick it up at Home Outfitters (located in the cookware area) for ~$8 (price just went up from ~$6) with the weekly 25% off coupon when you pay with an HBC card.

Looks like Kitchen Stuff Plus has it on sale for $5.99 though: http://www.kitchenstuffplus.com/lago...copper-cleaner and sometimes they have coupons out too.

And CT's regular price is $5.99! Nice, I know where I'm going to buy it now instead! http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/home/c...ontent=Default
