For the ones who agree to 8h shifts in Toronto, the website indicates lunch/snack breaks are scheduled-
A wide range of adult and youth volunteer opportunities are available at many buildings participating in Doors Open Toronto. Volunteers are ambassadors for this event and for the City of Toronto. Please contact the City of Toronto at [email protected] for more details. Information on upcoming recruitment sessions will be emailed.
All volunteers are guaranteed a one-hour lunch and two 15-minute breaks if committed to an eight-hour shift.
Really recommend the volunteer experience for anyone who is tourism/hospitality sectors or anyone who is keen on sharing their city with visitors. Sometimes one can have some great informative exchanges with visitors about line-up times at other sites or if they attended other Doors Open events. Something as simple as having a pitcher of water available with cups can make an impression on thirsty visitors on a warm/hot day. Kids seem to like having a green space to run around on at sites with some property near the entrance/parking area.
(BYOL unless site indicates there is something on offer for volunteers in a back room; good idea to always bring a water bottle, note pad and pen and wear something with pockets. If doing outside work greeting for a busy site, plan on wearing sunscreen and hat). If you agree to be photographed, you probably will land on someone's social media accounts.
I've only done Doors Open Hamilton in the past for sites I knew as a volunteer. I found that being familiar with local areas helpful in assisting out of town visitors to the next site on their itinerary or suggest nearby coffee shops or eateries when they indicated they were taking a break.
Depending the site/staff and its proximity to pedestrian traffic, volunteers may be expected to stay in their assigned areas for their shifts. Obviously someone will be expected to keep count of visitors for the stats sheet that the event gets publicity/tracking purposes. Some sites will likely allow a change in who tracks the people count during a shift just to vary tasks or the count might be done by a staffer-depends on the site. Also, the event lawn signs have to be put up before and taken down after each day's event hours. Volunteers might be expected to assist with the task as well.2021-Bring on the sunshine, sweets & online shopping.
