Haven't posted a brag in a while, but I am very impressed with myself today. I was able to hem 4 pairs of my DS pants into shorts!
Every pair of his pants had holes in the right knee. They were not worth patching up as he is growing taller, yet is still very skinny. He always has to have adjustable elastic waist bands to make any pair of pants stay up, so I knew he could still get some wear out of them.
I took out my mom's old sewing machine she gave me (thankfully she kept the manual, and gave me a kit with the basic essentails. Pins, measuring tape, thread)
Luckily I remembered a few of the basics from home economics. A little bit of time, several pin pricks, and fights with a 5 year old to try on another pair...he is set for summer, and I saved a lot of $$ not having to buy new summer clothes!!

Good for you for doing them by machine; I always did my son's by hand.
LOL WOB on the holy pants - that's something my priest BIL wears... (sorry, don't take offence, I'm not often picky, but that just struck me funny!).Last edited by Natalka; Sat, Apr 9th, 2016 at 10:06 AM.

Great job my son is the same way tall and skinny my other boys will never see the clothes my oldest does cuz he ruins them .
I did cut the ones that had the hole low enough (he won't wear too short shorts) but if I could sew I would hem them too. I took home ec but failed miserably. Maybe Baba can do a few stitches for me lol

I just discovered that Walmart jeans have the adjustable waist, and they skinny ones just look like regular jeans on him. (All other Walmart clothes always fit horribly) For $10 and the kid warranty; if they wear them out before they outgrow them, is a huge win for us.

Great idea! How do you get the denim not to fray once you cut and hem it? I've tried hemming some cheap jeans I got at the thrift for practise until I learn more sewing skills and they always fray and look terrible once they've been washed.

Its amazing how much you can recycle clothes , if you can sew and have a sewing machine.
I have made all of my daughters night clothes from sheets/ old fleece blankets/old tshirts etc. Since my sewing skiils are not the best, i stick to night clothes and making shorts or capris.
Good job on taking the first step to making your sons shorts, soon you can learn how to make easy jammies and so on

What a great brag! Frugal and environmentally friendly. I love hearing how people refashion and restyle clothes. I really wish I had paid more attention in home ec.

That is awesome. I have already taken the plunge and altered 2 summer skirts for my 18 month old dd. They were excellent condition hand me downs, but alas my girl is tall and skinny. Tops fit but the matching bottoms were falling off. A little seam rip, extra elastic band in, close up the hole and she is set I have been looking at some easy sew pillowcase dresses for her too.
