You're never too poor for Executive membership.... Here's the GUARANTEE that you'll get your $55* worth out of it.
(*$55 is the difference in cost between the Gold Star and Executive memberships)
First thing to note: The Costco Membership fee is refundable ANYTIME within the current year. so up to day 364, you can get a full refund of your membership... keeping that in mind:
On your next annual renewal, Upgrade to Executive. Pay the extra $55 for it, and then in about 10 or 11 months... Just BEFORE the year is up, have customer service check your purchases for the past year.
If you've spent $3000 (or will before they mail you the rebate cheque) in that first year, the 2% rebate will yield you $60... that's more than enough to cover the difference between Gold-Star and Executive (which is only $55). Congrats, you've broken even. Nothing lost. But you did gain from the Executive coupon books that come out every few months.
However... if you spent MORE more than $3000? Then it's even better. Spent $6000? well now your membership is fully paid for.
BUt what if you find out that you DIDNT spend $3000 in the past year??? Then you refund the membership, downgrade back to Gold-Star and you get your $55 back. -- You haven't lost a thing... other than you tied up $55 of your money for almost a year -- but you got it back... and you STILL got to use the Executive coupons.
If you keep it... but in your 2nd year you didnt spend $3000, you can refund THAT year's membership. -- You can do this year, after year... guaranteeing that you'll get at LEAST the current year's membership 'upgrade' fee refunded if you havent spent enough.
[You could also have them check this current year and see what your annual spending is like. -- Also if you plan on making a large purchase this year at Costco... Tires... a new TV, or appliances, etc... it's best to have been working on your Executive purchases already.]
In any event, it's a pure guarantee... you either win or break-even. You can't lose.
And for those of you who feel that this is scamming the system... it's not. This is something Costco staffers have told would-be sign-ups (including myself) to encourage them to try it.
[ASIDE: Even IF you get your rebate cheque and want to downgrade, you can still refund your Executive Membership, but you just can't redeem the cheque. -- And amazingly enough Costco keeps track of it. I went on a year hiatus without Executive... I rejoined the following year, and they sent me the cheque I never cashed from 2 years prior. Go figure!]Last edited by bhlombardy; Wed, Apr 27th, 2016 at 06:28 PM.
