Ground beef at Oceans Supermarket

Just to let everyone know, if you're buying regular ground beef made on premises at Oceans Supermarkets in the GTA, that you are most likely getting ripped off.

I made 4 x 100g patties (400g) , yes I used my electronic scale.

After grilling them I weighted them again.

What was remaining? 225 grams of beef !!!

So thats 175g fat in 400g beef = 0.4375% fat

According to Canadian Food Inspection Agency, regular ground beef can have a maximum of 30% of fat.

I will do this test again, this time accounting for evaporated water, and actually weighing the fat that dripped off into the tray.

I admire that you weighed the patties before cooking and after! Wow that is too much fat for sure. Very disappointing when grabbing what seems like a good buy. I bought my lean beef at RCSS today on sale for $2.98 a lb. Thanks for posting!!

That's terrible. Lean is the lowest I'll purchase. If it's on sale, I stock up on extra lean.

I don't think this would be extremely accurate... I'd say fry it up and weigh the fat in the pan. Water is quite heavy as well. I'd bet it account for at least a 1/3 of your weight loss. Do it with a chicken breast and it will significantly lighter. And there's barely any fat on chicken :) I don't even think using a drip tray on the bbq would be accurate as fat will apt and spatter and stay on the grill. I'd be curious to know though if you do pan fry up some. Weight the fat. And see how much came out.

Just to bake up what I said ^^ any weight loss program even hose prescribed by doctors tell you to weigh your chicken and fish AFTER you cook it, because so much moisture is loss. I believe I read up to 20% of your weight can be lost from water evaporation alone.

This link is pretty informative. Not that ground meat is pure muscle or anything so it doesn't 100% apply. But it says here beef muscle tissue is like 73% water.

I did a 2nd test, and it came out even worse.

Regular ground beef 400g

After Cooking 204g
Evaporation 81g
Dripped Oil 115

So 115g of fat in 400g = 0.2875 % which barely fall under the allowance.

81g just dissapears !!!

Btw this was grilled on TFAL Optigrill, plates were clean, drip tray empty and weight accounted for.

Will have to do the next test with lean ground beef.
