Ontario greenhouse company fined $1.5M for selling ‘Canadian’ vegetables grown mostly in Mexico
A Kingsville, Ontario greenhouse operation and two top executives were slapped with fines totalling $1.5 million Monday for selling foreign-sourced vegetables — mostly from Mexico — that were falsely labelled as being from Canada.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Mucci Farms sold more than $1 million worth of falsely labelled non-Canadian vegetables to various large Ontario retailers.

Really just sickening. We can not trust no one these days and there is more recall in food than before. It is sad as we don't know what we eat anymore........................................... ................

I don't mind buying Mexican-grown produce as long as it's labelled as such. But I hate being lied to. Don't lie to me... ever.

It's worthwhile comparing the large produce signage against any produce stickers or packaging. I still remember seeing the chalkboard state seedless cukes from Canada but the little stickers on the produce clearly stated Mexico.

Yes. Unfortunately there were NO labels for this product, they were deliberately mis-leading the public into believing they were home-grown, which is why they were fined. They were selling us a lie.
Wrt food labels, always read the fine print: MADE for Canada is far different from Made IN Canada or Product OF Canada.

what a betrayal. I actually go out of my way to purchase product of Canada. In Ontario they are building on perfectly good farmland and the govt is placing windmill farms and their access roads taking up large swathes of land where we could grow food. Check the frozen food dept too hardly any product of Canada.

I noticed in our local farmers market, where you would assume that most except the ethnic food comes from the farm name on the sign that a lot of the produce was product of Mexico or USA.
Not necessarily deceptive about it, but if I am going to support a local farm, and pay more than the grocery store, I want it to be local.

^that is really strange. the whole point of a farmers market is that it is fresh and local otherwise you could just go to the grocery store.
