Last week, the agency announced about 14,000 ducks at the commercial farm would be destroyed because of the H5N2 avian influenza.
Bird flu, H5N2, was also found last year in Ontario and British Columbia
Some people in Ontario are having birds in their back yard. Chickens. The danger is that bird flu can jump from poultry to poultry. So it can jump from ducks to chickens. People who handle poultry for a living are at increased risk of getting influenza when an outbreak has been announced in their area.
People who have not had an influenza shot this year and spend a lot of time around an area where there is an outbreak, or work closely with birds, may be at increased risk.
Back in 2009-10, we had the outbreak of the new flu, H1N1, that resembled the Spanish flu of the 1960s and earlier.
