Happened to see a tweet by Consumer Reports about a US recall on various dehumidfiers made by Midea under various brand names. Decided to check Health Canada-same recall is underway here.
Hazard identified
The dehumidifiers can overheat, smoke or catch fire, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
Health Canada has not received any reports of consumer incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of this product.
GD Midea Air Conditioning Equipment Company has received one report in Canada of a fire in one of the affected units and 38 consumer incident reports in the United States. The incidents involved fires and/or smoke, and property damage. There have been no injuries reported.
Number sold
Approximately 850,000 units were sold in Canada and 3.4 million units were sold in the United States.

Time to see if the two models at home, one of which I complained smelt of burning plastic when in use, are on the list. I know for certain that one was purchased at Costco.
Update-one model's serial number comes up as not affected.
The other model is not on the list.Last edited by Ciel; Thu, Nov 3rd, 2016 at 07:31 PM.

I'll check mine when I get home. Fingers crossed it's one of them, because I'd love to have a new one

Thankfully ours isn't on the list. Garrison brand sold at Canadian Tire. It's been running great. Much better than the two Haier ones we had previously.
RE: Burning smell.... we had a burning smell from one of the Haiers due to the coolant splashing on something inside the case. Although it seemed like it was more a burnt electrical smell. It was still under warranty and we were able to get another.

Unfortunately mine isn't included in the recall, so I am stuck with my Whirlpool.
