I particularly liked Assiniboine Park. You could go inside the Pavilion and check out The Pooh Gallery (everything Winnie the Pooh) on the second floor. The Nature Playground is lovely, with pretty topiaries along the way. There are beautiful gardens to explore: English Garden - might not be looking great at this time of the year, and Leo Mol Sculpture Garden - children might find it boring though. You could have a picnic beside the duck pond if you like. These are all free activities. Not sure if there are discounts available on zoo admission though.
If you enjoy living history, Fort Gibraltar is a fun place to visit and not that expensive.
