@Arvilish -suggest you see if there is something related to gerontology that appeals to you. Most of us are getting older and gerontologists are rare in Canada. Also see what programs SK has for new doctors regarding specialties or setting up (new or team) practices in areas needing more doctors. See what your school offers in the various medical streams for opportunities to get experience.
In Ontario, family doctors who have been around for years are funded differently than newer doctors in most recent years. Hence, the concern that new doctors cannot set up team practices, and they only can join an existing team practice if one doctor retires from a team and also cannot spend long time with each new patient.
With US medical school exposure, you'll also see different patient populations and the intersection of income vs medical care insurance issues.

Given the mention of medical residencies, the father of a Canadian practising in NYC also refers to lack of Ontario places to practice (but in smaller communities, Ontario does or didi have a program to encourage new doctors to set up in high need areas):
Timperio doesn't blame the attacker, but the lack of opportunity in Canada for young, aspiring doctors."If we could somehow fix the problem of getting our own, homegrown kids to go to medical school in Ontario, this wouldn't have happened," he said.
His son "couldn't get into an Ontario school because of so few spots. He graduated with a 90 per cent average."

Another article talks about spaces in Ontario:
Chu and a growing number of others denied access to residency have found themselves caught in a regulated system where provincial governments, based on an assessment of the needs of the population, dictate both the available student spaces in Canada's 17 medical schools as well as the number of residency spots for medical school graduates.
Ontario, for example, cut 25 residency posts last year and 50 the year before. But in a written response to questions, the provincial Health Ministry said the number of doctors in Ontario is projected to grow faster than the population, resulting in an increase of 650 physicians each year until 2025.

As for surgeons, I did see something about surgeons in one specialty that indicated operating room time was controlled by an entity like Cancer Care Ontario. How many people know that hospitals don't set their own hours of operation for surgery?

Make friends with people studying healthcare law in SK and in the state you are going to!

I found the letters to the editor related to healthcare in Ontario and funding.
The one about Cancer Care Ontario controlling operating hours and a reply from an entity concerning ovarian cancer:

A letter in the Toronto Star about hospital funding vs physician payment from an HR pro with hospital experience

There is one more letter about pediatric surgery care that was responsive for a toddler in need.

If you have any aspirations to work with Doctors without Borders, read most books by Guy Delisle in the cities that he lived in as his spouse works with DWB. Your public library may have his books.

You'll do well to explore all your student savings options through the student union, local BIAs, financial institutions, and groups that may sponsor grants for post-secondary studies (don't forget to look at local community groups or community foundations plus service groups with fundraising foundation arms). And you won't have worry about your brother eating your chocolate!

I was talking to someone last month about gerontology but unfortunately, this speciality is very limited. There were only 217 in the Canada in 2015.
