Also known as the Giant's grave, Slaghtaverty Dolmen is the supposed resting place of Abhartach.

Abhartach was a cruel chieftain who oppressed his people. Local descriptions of him vary. Some say that he was a dwarf, others that he was deformed in some way, but most agree that he was a powerful wizard and was extremely evil. He was killed, by the chieftain Cathain, who buried him upright as was the tradition for a chieftain. However he rose from the grave and demanded blood from his subjects to maintain his undead life. He was killed again but once more rose. Finally the her Cathain consulted a druid as to what was happening and he told him that Abhartach had become one of the neamh-mhairbh, the undead. he could not be killed but could be contained. Cathain then ran Abhartach through with a sword made of Yew wood, buried him upside down, placed thorns on the grave and covered it with heavy rocks. Abhartach grew no more. This grave still stands in Ireland and the people still tell of the man who was buried three times and the hero who stopped him.

I wish I dad seen this sooner.

Poveglia, Italy. Outside of Venice. Banned from visitors. I've wanted to go there since 2001.
