Question: using coupons on sale items- can stores refuse this?

I was in a Foodland grocery store today and the guy (the owners son) told me that other Foodland locations may accept coupons on sale items but at their location, they will not take coupons if the product is on sale....

They just took over this Foodland a few months ago and I've never had any issues until today. It just doesn't sound right to me but I could be wrong..

If anyone knows anything about this or if you could point me in the right direction. I can't seem to find info on it when I search on Google. Thanks!

I've never looked into it, but afaik, merchants are not obligated to accept coupons at all. So unless an independently-owned store is limited by law or contract (e.g. its franchise agreement), it would seem that it can accept or not accept coupons whenever and however it decides.

I used to have this happen at a grocery store I used to go to, they closed.

As the other posted said, use of any coupons is up to individual stores. For example, the SDM closest to us won't take printed coupons, but the two others within decent driving distance will take them.

Thanks so much for the fast reply. I didn't realize it is up to individual stores. Dang. That's a shame since it is the closest store to me.. I'd rather travel the few extra minutes though to a store that does accept coupons on sale items.

Our Superstore will let you use manufacturers coupons on special offer items, but not if they have a reduced sticker on them. Personally I can't see the difference because they get the money back from the manufacturer, but that's the way it is!!

The reason & excuse they are giving you is really foolish. Yes its up to a store to accept or not accept a coupon, as a coupon is NOT legal tender, but sale or not on sale has nothing to do with it.

They get reimbursed regardless from the manufacturer, irrespective of whether its on sale or not. But complain to their head office anyways and also on their FB or Twitter page, if they have one.

It's best to contact head office.. individuals seem confused.. I've gotten various responses since I started couponing again and if I'd not known the rules I'd be so confused. Keep in mind that often times these happen in the same stores.
Note these are all at the same walmart

` you can only use one coupon per every 6 items you buy
- Walmart has never ever given overage, you are not in the US
- you can use 10 of each type coupon per transaction
- you can use 6 per transaction and do multiple transactions

- you can use 6, go out and come back in to do more
- you can only do 1 per transaction per day
- 1 per product means 1 per transaction we can do however many transactions you want
- we don't take that coupon because we don't get our money back for it.. (outright fib, not just giving their understanding of the rules)
- we can't take that manufacturers coupon because you got it at zehrs, we only take ones that you find in our store.

Ringing through when pmming 10 items.
You can use unlimited coupons
you can use 6 coupons
You can use 4 coupons even on clearout because people are taking too many coupons from the coupon board *not sure what the excuse would be if ithey were printed or insert
Next time you can't use more than one printed because they all have the same pin # ... (they all have same UPC, see the PIN is different) well that other girl has the same PINS.. (NO, we are together.. they are all different.) silence.
FPCs.. we charge tax... (taxs is included) it says if applicable.. (its applicable here) calls csm.. same scenario , eventually ring it through.
FPCs now.. (tax is included) rings in.. asks for tax.. (tax is included) stands ground.. they fix it..
Toilet paper $9.98 ... rings in 14.98 .. (SCOP) cashier, I just got here and didn't have time to change it yet... (SCOP) Cashier, I'm not giving you SCOP .. (stands @ self serve checkout 5 mins without moving) register beeps.. (takes toilet paper & receipt leave.)
Clearance Rack ~happens a lot.. item 3.44 .. rings in 9.99 (SCOP) this didn't qualify (SCOP) it only qualifies if the sign says something and it rings in different. (it did) calls someone.. (takes free item and leave )


I have loads of other scenarios I've run into but I've run out of steam..

I pick and choose the things I stand firm on.. ie if someone is staying its a limit of 6.. that sounds plausible and I'll just go to a different store/cashier if I want a few hundred.... if someone says its a limit of 1 per 6 items.. I'll wait for a manager.. that makes no sense.. I just wait quietly and act in a calm respectful manner.. Some cashiers just don't want to get in trouble by doing something they shouldn't which I understand.. Some on the other hand seem to be jerks and act as though we are trying to rip off the store.. If they persist with an offensive attitude I've started to report them. We don't deserve that.
