Can anyone tell me what this outlet is supposed to be?
Apologies, previous owner painted over it.

i'm not savvy on electricity but looks like an electrical outlet, but should not have nails in it
might be a good idea for a trained professional to look at this for you and make it safe
good luck

It doesn't have vertical slots for the plug, from what I can see, and those are screws.
It is the weirdest thing.
We have one identical to in in the master bedroom, and nowhere else in the house that I can see. I wonder if it is supposed to be for phone lines?
near it the one in the living room, higher up on the same wall, is an inset single outlet with a hook that is part of the outlet. It seems to be for plugging in and hanging a wall clock. groovy lol.In 2020 I had 100 FREE Grocery pickups! Subscribe to PC Optimum Insiders & get 25,000 PC Optimum pts

Maybe I should just get a mid century wall clock and phone table.

It could be for telephone or wired for a plug. The slots could be under, or they could have been taken out. The only way to know is to open it. Thus says my electrician husband.
He thinks the outlet with the hook would have been for a light fixture.
Yeah, we had groovy things in the sixties!
