Without a powerhead type of attachment, the Shopvac would be best for bare floors. Otherwise, a floor attachment is not going to pick up up all of the stuff on a carpet, especially the higher or thicker the pile.
Could you afford $849 + HST for a Miele Blizzard vac? Bagless and comes with all attachments.
I've used it on carpeted stairs with good results. Our upright is very old and has no attachments. I don't know if I'd want a Shopvac for a regular vacuum, however.
They are very very noisy.
