I am following the lawsuits re the bread price fixing with interest. Have they cleaned up their acts now they have been caught with their hands in the cookie jar. I think not. A friend in England just sent me a photo of a pack of 6 jam filled donuts being sold for 50 pence, that's about 65 cents Cdn. What would we pay? Something tells me free market competition pressures are still not in play here.
It's that, but also what the market will bear for those items. Our culture dictates that we're suckers for donuts and the like. Not so much in England.
The grocery store donuts here just have to be on par or just slightly cheaper than a box at the nearby Tim's to make people think they're getting a deal.
But I dont think donuts are as big a deal in jolly ol' England.
So if your a retailer and you can get $3 for a box of donuts, why wouldnt you charge it?

But I think it's the opposite to what Bhlombardy said, that cakes, donuts and biscuits are such common things over there (ex. tea time) that they have to have lower prices and higher quality baked goods to compete with other stores.

Do they have "English muffins" over there? or do they just call them "muffins"?

My point exactly. Healthy competition there, lower prices.

Chicken (and poultry products in general) are excessively priced here. You can thank the standards council for that. Those products have to adhere to strict guidelines and regulations here, and then inspections that the cost to operate is so high there's little choice.Quote:

Lamb seems to be a lot cheaper in the UK as well.
