Update: some Loblaws in ON have stopped checking receipts! Yay! But you may find a person at the entrance/exit wearing a vest that says 'loss prevention'. Social media backlash helped to change this, says CBC News.

In the Ottawa area, some Loblaws stores want to check your receipt especially if you used the self check out lane. Now many time there may be 2 cashiers working but about 6 self check out lanes open. Guess where they want you to go? Self check out!

A YouTuber at an RCSS store shows how this went, when some just walked out without showing their receipt. Some just walked by the poor employee

Daily Hive posted a copy of the Ottawa store sign, "Please be prepared to show your receipt upon exiting to validate and maintain inventory accuracy. Thank you for your cooperation".

Some reporters said that this is like Costco. Well, at Costco, you pay a membership fee, which is a little different.

    Would you show your receipt?

Forgot to say, this may be a blessing in disguise. If you have a choice of 2 or 3 stores to get groceries, and one makes you line up to show your receipt, and has few cashiers, and may have higher prices, this may make it easier to decide where you are not going to shop.

Thanks for helping out Loblaws. Make sure you don't fix the prices on bread with other stores, eh? You know, 'to maintain inventory accuracy'. 'Thanks for your cooperation"

Loblaws is within their legal rights to request an examination of your receipt.

You are also within your legal rights to deny their request.

However, Loblaws is also within their legal rights to then deny/ban anyone they want from their stores, as long as it does not run afoul of Human Rights legislation. i.e. on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability and conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted or in respect of which a record suspension has been ordered

For example, they can deny entry to all individuals under 6 feet height.

You're right. Apparently stores with a membership like Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's wholesale have some legal rights in the US, since it follow US law about membership agreements.

Just finished letting Loblaws know that they are going to loose money, if people have a choice in where they shop.

They do put restrictions within the membership agreements. However, you can still refuse. Their simple solution is to immediately cancel and refund your membership on the spot and then ask you to leave. They did this during the pandemic with regards to mask requirements. Some customers refused to wear them and had their memberships immediately revoked/refunded, before being asked to leave. Further refusal at that point made them illegal trespassers and subject to arrest.
