I came across a similar situation regarding peaches and received the following explanation:

Peaches come in different sizes and weights. Instead of just selling peaches for $/lb or kg, they place them into a plastic container of a certain volume (measured in litres) and then say $ for 3L of fruit. As long as the fruit fill the container by volume, the measurement is true. Supposedly, it averages large and small fruit.
