I find it difficult to buy wool gloves or mittens. Most everything is made of acrylic yarn and, IMO, synthetic is not as warm as actual wool. In the past, when I was backpacking and hiking, I would just slip a pair of wool socks over my hands. They were almost as good as mittens, sans thumb. I could find wool socks, but not handwear. I think I might have to go back to my work-around solution, if I cannot locate suitable wool gear. In desperation, I bought a pair of knit mittens and will wear them out, but don't think that they will do the job when it drops below -30C.
My food may not befit a king, but I eat like a horse.

Good Morning! Looks sunny out but cold I am assuming!
Looked over the up coming sale flyers and am actually happy that my list is very small. I could really not shop at all and probably should aim for that but I know that won't happen! Really it's more a stock up the freezer of lean ground beef and hashbrowns- (taco meat and big breakfast are things my youngest makes often) I couldn't imagine having to by lean beef not on sale!
Having a mini getaway this week/weekend. Had a good casino offer for free draws/free play/slot tournament and free brunch etc. So booked a room(free using points) since it is a 2 day event. Then decided I should see if the spa had any openings and they do! So eyebrow wax/massage/facial and pedicure (free using points) The one appt is early morning Friday so decided to book another room Thursday night (Free comp offer) Then DS asked if he could get a free room Saturday night so booked that for him (free with points) The goal of using up the points is off to a good start! I am so looking forward to this and am long overdue for a pedicure especially! I need to start planning spa days more (especially since it is free) I love staying there because I walk around so much that I easily hit my step goal each day. And the gas is always at least 10Cents cheaper a L so plan our fill ups when passing through!
Have a great day!

Good Morning Everyone,
UGH, I woke up and well I was trying to tell myself to get up I could hear a neighbour outside and the snow had that crunch to it, that your nostrils are going to freeze if you go outside crunch. Luckily today is a work from home today but still it made me just want to pull my covers up and not get out of bed.
I had to laugh at myself, yesterday I needed a break from my spreadsheets so I set my 15 minute timer and decided to take the garbage out and fully defrost my car. I started to think to myself "WOW, I have been super productive today, this is not normal for a Wednesday (normally for me Wednesday is the day I get my work done and that is it), I was feeling super proud of myself and then it hit me, it was Tuesday.
Outside of work yesterday I got the laundry done, defrosted both cars, look out Mom's garbage and our recycling (it was literally overflowing but I couldn't get to the bins), put everything away in the pantry and just some general tidying up.
I was going to make Mozzarella Chicken for dinner last night but my tummy was a little meh so switched and make Chicken Alfredo Bake with Mushrooms and Broccoli. Now to figure out dinner for tonight, maybe I will do Steak Sandwiches.
At work I have a project that I thought was going to take me till Friday to finish but it looks like maybe just maybe I might get it done today so super happy about that. Now that we are back into the swing of things all the things are coming my way but I am trying to be realistic with my time and let everyone know what I think a realistic timeline is.
No idea what today will bring yet, I need to be intention with my time but so far no plans for today yet.
Happy Wednesday Everyone2022 is going to be my year, the year I find organization in my life and the year I focus on myself,
follow along as tackle day to day life and whatever else 2021 throws at me:

Continuing from your exercise in frugal living, what do Frugal members do if they are already living a near-acme level of frugality?
My mom lived through WWII, so she would know about privation, shortages, and hunger. She would tell me that 'I constantly live on a war-footing', with a 2-year+ supply of food in the basement.
I chat with my family about long-term financial planning. My brother does well and says that if things get bad, he can always cut back on things like travel, entertainment, or clothes. He figures that his travel will diminish around the time his health costs rise.
My question to Frugal members is: what does one do if they are already living a very frugal existence, without spending anything on clothes, entertainment, or clothing? If things go badly, there isn't anything left to cut, since I already don't indulge in them in the first place. Anyone else ever think on those terms? My food may not befit a king, but I eat like a horse.

Morning!
Got up early. Made the bed and packed the bags so we are ready to go! Next time I am with my friend I need her assistance in ordering some new swimsuits! She has ordered online and is always happy so I need her help! (my fave swimsuit needs to be replaced ASAP)
Getting some work done this morning and then packing up work bag so I can finish up my day in the hotel room.
The late afternoon/evening plan is enjoying the hot tub/pool/shower and then a nice dinner and then early to bed.
Youngest can survive on breakfast for dinner both nights. We have lots of eggs/bacon/hashbrowns etc. There is also a pizza in the freezer if he finds it. Told him we would bring him 2 meals home on Saturday (chicken chow mein and wings) so he knows what is his dinner and late night snack Saturday!
Oldest only seems to sleep at home Wednesday nights so he hasn't been eating here much at all lately.
I have a roast in the fridge that I think I will cook Sunday. We have everything needed for dinner so looks like I won't have to go shopping till next week which is nice. Needed to stop going all the time...this way we plan to use what we have and less gets wasted. I also have the 2pk of lean beef in fridge that has a Jan 14th date on it so I will deal with that on Sunday too. Thinking I will make meatballs with it - Make and cook them and then we can have them as is with veggies and salad/sweet potatoes on Tuesday night for dinner. (Monday will be leftover roast beef dinner) Yeah a bit of a plan!!
Enjoy the day!Last edited by Frugalbigmama; Thu, Jan 9th, 2025 at 10:15 AM.

My house is pretty frugal. But we do have our luxuries. Example this year is our 25th anniversary. We are planning / hoping for 3 nights away.
But, if we needed to really crunch it down , that would go.
I find, alot of what I do pretty frugal.. use the buy nothing site on fb. Put stuff on there alot! .. the whole karma thing really works..
I cook from. Scratch. Mend.. ect.
I don't hang laundry. It's not worth it to me.... if I had to crunch down I would.
Great thought exercise.!!
Currently, I've set myself a 25.00 goal... try to get 25.00 extra via airmiles, swagbucks, co 51 ect.... monthly. I think it's doable

Those early morning hours awake can be hard, Cath!!
If you have a 2025 planner or extra sheet of paper, just writedown things you would like to see for yourself, achieve for yourself this month.
Hope you have looked at Voila or Iga for grocery delivery (min. $75 purchase required) if the three month free delivery offer is still available, for the larger items. I
I keep have broken sleep and it was unwise to have cola early this morning. Had productive 3-5am just writing down things, news to read, and possible events on two sheets of paper. Very messy writing but activity kept me warm in bed and occupied. Then a few hours of sleep came in sections.

@HermanH The transfer of skills or ways to save from Depression era elders to next generation may have been interrupted by time the third generation discovered contract work, lack of benefits, and finding family and friends scarce when hitting hard times. Mending or repairing is very Ymmv scenario depending on what is accessible on own vs reliance on greater community/logistics/turnaround timelines.Repair cafes in urban centres help fill in crucial need for fixing things.
Online, I have notice a spate of incidents in which individuals relying on social assistance have a key appliance or device fail during the holiday closures of non-profit organizations and appeals for donations of said items or money for food and bills after Christmas were being posted. It struck me that there really isn't much of a fallback appliance resource in such cases unless one has cash or tax credits to buy new or have someone close who can bridge the need with a loaner unit.Last edited by Ciel21; Thu, Jan 9th, 2025 at 05:30 PM.

About the lack of wool in gloves/mittens. Sportchek sells Smartwool socks and base layers but I
Am unsure about gloves. I would require a stretchy glove or bigger fleece glove that can layer over the bulky fake leather gloves to allow me to cope with-10 to -20C temps. Mittens are not helpful given that I have to hold a cane handle. If other hand is free, I can tuck it into coat pocket to warm up with need of pocket handwarmer.
Basically moving around during sunny hours helps but dusk make cold temps worse for hands, especially when carrying things or say a little one.
I did notice the fabric tag in my Burton clearance-priced hat has a smidge of wool, about 9%.Last edited by Ciel21; Thu, Jan 9th, 2025 at 06:02 PM.
