Can you use a coupon on items on the discount rack at Safeway?

I was just at Safeway and I tried using coupons on discountinued items on their clearance rack. The cashier told me I could not use any coupons because they are already on sale and also that my coupon was worth more than the discounted item price, thus making it free. She said I could however, use coupons on Safeway Club member discounts.

Was my cashier correct?

I use coupons on the discounted rack all time.
However, I have never used a coupon worth more than the item - but got pretty close (9 cents for an item for example).

I was told that once at Save On and the cashier refused to use the coupon on it... I told her that they can keep the item then... I ask her where does it say that but she didnt have an answer for me so I think it was a bunch a bologne too

you should be able to use them on clearance however i know that at my SOF i cant use a coupon if its more than the value of the product but if equal value you should be aloud to and if it clearout due to not comming in anymore, you should still be able to use for example if the coupon says on reg priced items and its reduced to clear the item is at reg price because its reduced to clear and not a advertised sale item. if that makes sense ....

It is probably because it was worth more than the item. Many stores won't let you use coupons for items that are less than the coupon's value. I have never had a problem with safeway and coupons.
