Do I think that he should have been arrested for inciting a riot? no. More than pure jaywalking? yes!

I have worked in Parliament, in the UK but I am sure the same goes for most countries, I couldn't tell you what 99% of protests like that were about, you walk by them, roll your eyes at people carrying on and carry on. Real change happens from inside government, from speaking to people and showing how change can be made. It is all very well saying we don't like xyz but there needs to be a plan on how to change it and how those changes can be paid for. The ones I can remember, the guy who lost his underage son in the war when they didnt check his ID when he signed up, he stood outside Westminster Abbey every day and gave people info on how he wanted then to ask for 2 forms of ID and copy them for the files of everyone enlisting - and he got it. What did the people in the Mayday riots get? just bad publicity - they may be representatives but you show you don't value the system, they don't want to meet with you because they know it wont go anywhere.
Well sadly this Government has shown they don't value the Citizens of this Country, and so we take to the streets. Not all MayDay protests were violent but they of course were the ones that made the news. The Toronto MayDay protest was peaceful and we had 150 petitions for a Royal Commission signed. They do accomplish things. Hitting the streets can bring change or at the very lease pave the way for change. I'm exhausting all options both from within Parliament and outside of it and it's our right as Canadians to protest, whether anyone agrees with it or not.

Ok, I see this thread has evolved quite a bit. I did look up the law generally regarding officers identifying themselves. Undercover officers do not have to id themselves if asked. They do have to id themselves if they are arresting someone and they ask. However, there are exceptions and breaking up an assembly is one of those times. Identifying would happen later, when safe for everyone. Uniformed officers will id themselves when arresting someone if asked, when safe to do so. If a uniformed officer is being impolite it is reasonable to ask for name, etc. Being charged with an offense is considerably different than being prosecuted and still different than being convicted.

As I mentioned, I was talking about my experience in the UK and the three years I worked in Parliament there, the May Day parades were violent riots (and in general protests there make protests here look like nothing is happening)

lecale, thanks for posting that article as it's the only one I've read about Saturday. Is there a link to it at all that I could grab from you?

So the claim he was charged with inciting a riot has been proven incorrect. And as I suspected, he was asked to do something (leave the intersection) by the Officer. When he did not, he was arrested. Makes sense and seems pretty valid. And I learned something new. When in the area of a general assembly, Police do not need to identify themselves until they are in a safe area/situation to do so.

Jadzia I never said he was charged with inciting a riot simply arrested on that basis. In post #5 all the way back on the first page I also state what he was charged with which are the 5 counts listed above. Regardless of why he was arrested it wasn't why I started this thread, I was curious about Police not wearing ID and refusing to Identify themselves. The only charge that might stick is the mischief charge due to the fact he was on the street but I see it being thrown out.

Wow, how did I miss this thread?

I have a question, Tara when you(this group) organized this protest did you file a route or location for your march? The reason I ask is here in Mtl (protest central) the groups are asked to file a route and times and dates of protests/riots(yes it's been 3 months of student riots here in case the R.O.C. was not aware). That may have set off the police.

As for this being a peaceful protest. Yup, it definitely was.

By the way Montreal police and SQ officers (provincial police) all wear name tags. They all should IMO.

Patty, I didn't organize this event therefore I don't know if anything was filed for a gathering/march. I know that the Toronto rallies against Voter Suppression which I do help organize, we ALWAYS work with the police and get the proper permits if we expect a large crowd and police assistance with a march route which ALWAYS takes place right there in the middle of busy Toronto streets. The police will escort us and we will "block traffic" for a good 10-15 minutes with never having a problem. Toronto police have been awesome with us and motorists who are "inconvenienced" by the marches have been just as great.
