Taking him to McDonald's should be considered a punishment.

Are we going to punish his illness forever? I think the supervised outings will do him more good than harm. I think that you have to dissociate the person from the illness when you look at this case.

Try explaining that to the family that lost their son ... really.. it's easy for us to chit chat about this (well to some degree) because we havent lost someone this way.. but flip the coin and not convince we would preach the same. Someone like this should never be allowed in society.. not even at Mc Donalds..lol!....

Every illness has its own support community...I think those parents did get support and the issue was resolved in days.

But it shouldn't have happened in the first place. & the media certainly didn't support them. They made it seem like those parents should be grateful to get their child back. Can you imagine the outrage if the situation had happened because the parents were of a certain race or religion? The parents were perfectly capable of taking care of their child, but now they have to have a 24 hr caregiver available at their expense. Would a healthy parent be expected to stay up 24hrs a day (or hire a caregiver) to take care of an infant?

It's worthwhile to read the interview from the cbc. Li is religious and understands he has sinned. He wishes he had been killed. He is deeply sorry to the family of the man who was killed. I think he is pretty repentant.

He was delusional...he was on a mission from God to take down the aliens. He was not aware that he had schizophrenia, was unmedicated, and the disease took his brain over. In this situation, past behavior is no predictor of future behavior.

I suppose in this case it would depend on whether the brittle diabetic was pre-warned that such a thing could happen. Secondly, Canada has shorter, more compassionate sentences than the US (and Europe has shorter sentences as well) So it also depends on geography.

& even within Canada, sentences differ. Even within the same city, all depends on the judge one gets.

Maybe if there were more consistance across the board, there would be less outrage.

We are talking about a person with an illness. Yes, if this happened to one of my kids I could never forgive him and would want him dead, but at the same time, I would still feel some small empathy towards him because he did not commit the crime out of malice so I would not have much of a problem with supervised outings.

I spent most of my life never being diagnosed with my muscle condition, bounced around to many doctors, denied treatment even after diagnosis... I ended up on a disability pension but my gov drug plan doesn't cover most of my meds. If I took all my meds as prescribed, I would starve. I want to work again but barriers to meds and physio have made it harder to prevent deterioration and regain abilities. I fell through every crack but I'm getting through it. Fighting for my rights is my full-time job.

Now apply this to someone who is mentally ill, has less of a grip with reality, and has trouble navigating the system. There are all kinds of barriers to taking meds and other treatments: affordability, stigma, poor relationships with psychiatrists, doctors not taking patient's symptoms or side effects seriously, cultural beliefs on mental illness and meds, lack of family support, lack of adequate care especially in less populated areas... The environment is also instrumental in identifying individuals in need of help when they can't, or have barriers to accessing help.

I know the system helps people, and there are some great mental health workers, psychiatrists, psychologists...but the system fails some too.

I heard of someone making under 400$ a month being forced to pay for their own treatment for being at risk for harming a child. He didn't have a record, reported never having fulfilled the fantasy, and took many measures to not be around children, but there was no coverage for treatment until he's convicted. I've known of someone begging the ER for hospitalization for rage and fear of harming others but was instead placed on a 1yr waiting list because so far had managed to stay home on "bad days". The meds from a family doc had been unsuccessful in managing the symptoms, and this person was begging for help.

I only hope that what's not working is dealt with, not just case by case but also system-wide. It's about everyone: the individual, their families and friends, the work force, the education system, strangers who cross their path... Helpful and timely treatment is also felt at all levels, even if we tend to consider mental illness as an individual's problem.

umm, he didn't commit the crime in china, so there would be no punishment there.

as for sending ppl back to 'where they came from', please let us know where your heritage is from... just in case
