Fall for 2012 begins in the Northern Hemisphere on September 22, 10:49 A.M. EDT.
The word equinox comes from the Latin words for "equal night." The fall and spring equinoxes are the only days of the year in which the Sun crosses the celestial equator.
... but there aren't exactly 12 hours each of daylight and night on the fall equinox:
"On the equinoxes, the very center of the Sun sets just 12 hours after it rises. But the day begins when the upper edge of the Sun reaches the horizon (which happens a bit before the center rises), and it doesn't end until the entire Sun has set. Not only that, but the Sun is actually visible when it is below the horizon, as Earth's atmosphere refracts the Sun's rays and bends them in an arc over the horizon."

Same here Patty, especially about the rain - last year on this day we got 30mm, today nothing, and nothing in forecast.

Yay! Let the countdown to the Winter Solstice begin!!!!
Normally, I'm not super happy about seeing summer go, but this year, I have a very personal ulterior motive. I just want this whole pregnancy thing to end, and it should, right around the winter solstice

DAN!!!
No.
Those two little fires will soon be replaced by the fires in our fireplace outside that hubby will light, and we will sit there staring at the flames with wine or scotch in our hands. WHICH, my darlin' Dan...is one of the wonderful things about fall. Fires, the crispness in the air, the falling leaves....but what comes after that, is c-r-a-p. And I refuse to use an *.
See...there aren't that many good 4-letter words to describe the season that follows winter.
