Today I have had a female cardinal visiting, I had to look it up since she had all the tell-tale signs of being a cardinal, but without all the bright red that I expected.
On another strange note - as I was outside in the backyard earlier this afternoon, one of the kids in the neighbourhood that lives a street over was wandering through the pathway behind the house and I am certain was going to try & sneak into the backyard between the bushes until she realized she can't (I put up chicken wire from the ground to about 3 feet high) and also because she suddenly noticed me there.
Then I saw her sister appear (the first one is probably about 6, the sister is 10 or 11) and they whispered to each other, then had the nerve to ask me if I would give them my bird feeder.
I told her no, that we bought ours to feed the birds in our yard, and she should ask her parents to buy their own. Of course now I'm wondering if she had sneaked into the backyard, would I be suddenly missing a bird feeder or two?Last edited by KrazE; Sat, Sep 15th, 2012 at 05:47 PM.

Oh and a white-throated sparrow hit the window at work yesterday. I looked after him for the day and released him mid-afternoon.

We have seen a Roadrunner here and no it's not being chased by a coyote
He is so stinkin' fast I can't get a pic but hopefully he'll slow down a bit next time he's in the backyard

I've been seeing a baby-ish robin around and thought maybe s/he had been left behind - but I also saw two adults the other day. I hope they get a move on - or they'll have to deal with SANDY! (Or maybe I should wish that they stick around here for a few days.)

Darn migration! 2 more window strikes at work, so I'm now known as the bird lady Good news is all survived and were released later the same day.
1 male golden crowned kinglet; 1 female golden crowned kinglet
I didn't take pics because they were already traumatized, but here's what they look like:
Tiny little things; the males have a bit of red in the middle of their yellow crown, but it's often not visible.

Our bird feeders have been busy. Daily we are getting chickadees, goldfinches, white breasted nuthatch, blue jays, downy and hairy woodpeckers, juncos and our red bellied woodpecker. Have seen one common redpoll and both cardinals and house finches every few days. Also had a northern shrike hit patio door and got good look at him as he got his wits about him on shepherds hook.

FeederWatch eNews: The Cam is back!
The FeederWatch Cam is back online!
The FeederWatch Cam now boasts HD quality viewing and a new, interactive website. The cam is still hosted by Tammie and Ben Hache in Manitouwadge, Ontario. The Haches invite you to look in on their rotating ensemble of winter birds, including redpolls, grosbeaks, nuthatches, jays, and even the occasional Ruffed Grouse. Each week the cam host posts her Project FeederWatch counts for the week and you can see whether she's spotted something you missed. The cam is offline during the night (generally 7:00 P.M. to 7:00 A.M.)

Last week I saw and heard 2 big Vs of Arctic Swans flying over. They usually don't show up until mid-March.
