You can get sub kits at the supermarket deli section and sandwiches from the supermarket deli too. At RCSS, they even pink sticker these.

the sad thing is it is not even food places that break the basic rules of asepsis.

try your hospital or Dr's office.

dr's that keep the same paper on the exam table for each patient. the nurse that gives you an injection and wipes your skin with alcohol and then wipes the alcohol off, big nono, you let the alcohol dry. and what was she touching before she started touching all her supplies. i see them breaking the most basic rules that are DRILLED into you when you are in school learning about sterilization and maintaining a sterile or clean area.

the nurse that lets the IV tube touch the floor! super big nono, drilled into when you learn about IV's. once it touches the floor, you get a new one.

i could go on. i'm not a germ freak, but hate it when ppl are lazy and play with your health. boo!

Not true, unless you have an extremely cheap doctor, the paper is always ripped off and thrown in the garbage before another patient comes in. Same with the rubbing alcohol and injections, I've never seen a nurse wipe it off. Maybe it's just where you live.

Unfortunately, I must agree with Anisa. As soon as she posted about the paper in the doc's office I remember as a teen being in there and the paper had someone scribbling with a pen, before I came into the room. That was the paper I was on, but I was too shy to ask about it.

At the RCSS bakery, they don't always cut the loaves before wrapping. They have the bread cutting machine behind the counter. I asked the bakery person to cut the bread. She had disposable gloves but took the bread out with her hands and put it in the machine. I told her I wanted a new loaf and I wanted her to wear the disposable gloves and she gave me attitude. So I went to the customer service desk and the bakery manager's eyes grew wide when I told him what happened. He fixed everything but I didn't buy bakery bread from there again.

Cold sore mouth wipe happened to me at Miami airport restaurant. Plane was delayed so they gave us a meal voucher. I could NOT buy the sandwiches after I saw that. Just bottled juice or packaged prepared food.

    That is just disgusting.

I am not a germ-o-phobe, but I have standards....and that would really PMO!

I got an email back from the owner.
Said he was going to address his concerns with the staff.

I hope he does because I will NOT hesitate to kick up a fuss about this.
Love like crazy everyday and smile.

My dr,s office is awesome. Sadly i have seen this in specialists offices. You alway see the paper crumpled where a butt has been.
The alcohol thing happens everywhere. In 15 years of knowing the right way, i havenot had one nurse or technician do it correctly.

I had the same thing happen at Subway several times when they used to have the seafood subs. I'm allergic to seafood and having to stop them from cutting my sub with the same knife and using the same gloves as the seafood sub before me was not uncommon. Also you would be surprised at how many restaurants use the same oil to cook regular food and seafood/shrimp.

In my opinion there are two separate issues occurring here. The first is food safety, and the second is what I'll call "customer preference".

From a food safety perspective, gloves are not necessarily more hygienic than bare hands. As the examples have shown, if your gloves or your hands touch money, dirty surfaces, or open sores, and aren't changed/washed, they are just as dirty. Gloves can actually cause some food workers to act less hygienically because of a false sense of security. http://www.foodsmart.govt.nz/elibrar...ting_about.htm As long as a worker is only touching sanitary surfaces and food, it doesn't matter if they are handling different orders from multiple customers, because there is no transfer from customer-to-customer until the order is complete. Passing food to another employee on an "assembly line" is not less hygienic simply because of the passing. You'll notice that often a separate employee is doing the cash transactions in these situations.

In general, having your food and another customer's food touch, or getting cheddar cheese in your sauce, etc, is not really a concern. Where it is a concern is if you have an allergy or a dietary requirement that you wish to have respected. Usually, mentioning this ahead of time will help to make sure that extra care is taken, but if you have a life or death allergy, or feel like you must be certain, you should prepare the food yourself.

Pre-packaged food is not necessarily better either - someone still makes the pre-packaged sandwiches, and they don't have an audience to make sure that they are following foodsafe principles. Even buying ingredients to make your own food can be unsanitary, unless you are careful to wash every vegetable, and prepare your own bread. If a person with the flu squeezes your tomato before you buy it, and you then rest it on your cutting board before washing it, you are potentially transferring those germs to your own food.

Big chain restaurants are also not necessarily better - they frequently have underpaid, under-trained staff who are motivated to take short cuts.

There is no good solution! (Unless you grow and make your own food from scratch!).

it's interesting who uses gloves and who doesnt when it comes to restaurants.
Mcdonalds does not wear gloves when prepping your food.
In fact if I recall correctly when I work there about 9 years ago, i asked why the kitchen prep didnt and was told that the gloves didnt make a difference because germs got trapped under the gloves and they become more dirty and can be torn easily, and that handwashing is more appropriate.

That being said, the cashiers that take your order and handle your money are the ones who scoop up your fries.

At my current workplace there is a customer who comes in twice a week and buys milk, he keeps his change in this filthy little plastic cup that smells like pee, dumps it out on the counter and counts it out.
Everytime I serve him I run away and wash my hands afterwards because thats just disgusting.

isthia - couldn't agree with you more!
Spending a little extra time making your own food will save you from worrying about contamination/poisoning issues. And your own cooking will likely be healthier too!
