Dogs have an extremely keen sense of smell and hearing, so maybe they aren't barking at nothing after all. They can get a whiff of a scent (especially deer or rabbits nearby at night) and start barking. They hear sounds we don't hear and they start barking, other times they bark to communicate or to challenge or to indicate their awareness of something we don't notice. They are also extremely sensitive to the moods of others, and to their surroundings.
As well, they bark to exercise their vocal chord range, since barking is a natural expression of being a dog.
My neighbour's dog is a notable barker. And they don't make any attempt to control him. He's territorial & hyper-sensitive, so when you walk past on the sidewalk, he starts barking before you pass, while you pass, and long afterwards. I used to hate that, but now I realize he makes a very good watch-dog, not just for them, but for me.
And I use foam ear-plugs.( Valiant, the valley-ant )

A contentious thread on 1 of my other websites where everybody keeps on stating their own opinion over and over and over again in the same words, for 13 pages. There are 4-6 people arguing about 1 topic, and it's like a "broken record" playing.

Guest: why can't I call out or get calls..
Me: Sorry about that, a truck hit the phone lines about 3 blocks away so the phones are out for the whole area.
Guest: That`s no excuse, you should call them to see whats going on.
Me: yeah, i`ll do that right now..just tell me how.
Guest: Oh yeah..
