Wireworms inside radish brought from Walmart...goss

Yes, just not long from my other rant, here comes another. pm'ed some radish at walmart last week, decided to use them in soups....was in a hurry, so I quickly peel it and cut into piece, threw them into the pot. didn't notice much except for little brown dots on the surface and thought it was nothing big......after 30mins of cooking, I went to check the soup, radish has been fully cooked and turned into a lighter color and there I see them! dark brown tiny worms looking thingys embedded inside every single piece of radish! OMG! went to google and was sure they were wire worms. I scooped all the radish out of the soup and toss all in the trash, but now....is my soap still edible?, i had other ingredients in there, would be waste if I need to dump out everything.....any ideas???

toss the soup, take the produce back to walmart or go online and complain

Wireworm are beetle larvae. Mealworms are a beetle larvae that are eaten by people but I've never heard of wireworms being edible until I google searched and found this

Yeah unfortuanately toss it. Your are better off healthy then save the soup and be sick

I sure wouldn't eat the soup - didn't know there was a soup one could use radishes in, though!

I got some amazing radishes at Sobey's last week - huge bunch for 50 cents - fresh, yummy, and bug-less!

Sorry to hear about that! What a bummer to dispose of soup after all that work. But I agree with all the posts - your health is more important than whatever the cost of the soup. At least you wont have to worry about anything growing in your gut.

I have only had 1 instance of finding bugs in produce and that was in a large red pepper (not Walmart though).
I tend to bypass quite a few of the produce items at Walmart. I find that their products aren't too fresh (often find things wilted) or are very small in size (a grapefruit can resemble the size of a small orange at times!).

Yup..I agree.

Walmart has really horrible produce, their meat is not that great either.

Plus its usually the same price or more expensive than normal dedicated grocery stores like No Frills , Food Basics , Freshco etc.

I almost never buy fruits or veggies at WM , not worth it either quality wise or pricewise, plus the customer service is horrible.

Rude, arrogant, tired worker's who don't like their job & helping customer's is the last thing on their mind. Don't blame them as they are treated like crap by WM too just like their customer's

I hope Canadians teach WM a lesson the same way they taught Target a lesson , unfortunately people still shop at WM in Canada inspite of their poor products & crappy service ..making them ( WM ) so arrogant & rude.

It was an OK store, but in the last 2-3 years I have seen they are taking Canadian customer's for granted & providing horrible service & products & price..hopefully they don't get away with this.

That's pretty hard to miss. What I think you are dealing with is some stale (not fresh) radishes in which the vascular bundles (water transport tubes) have aged and browned, giving the effect of little dots and lines. This is how radishes typically go bad. If they are old enough, they will get brown dots in them.

So, don't toss the radishes, and don't toss the soup.

but they were not thin lines....they are big enough and looks like a brown worm, I wish I did took a pic. I inspected a piece of it, it has the feature of a worm with "sections" to the body.....it looked like they live inside the radish, near the surface but not extending outside the skin, when I peel the radish, I just notice dots, so I continue to peel deeper hoping I can get rid of them, but it didn't....don't know what I was thinking at the moment, should of known there was something fishy with them...sigh....things always goes wrong when I rush things.

yup, they are white radish also known as lo bak(chinese), I use them for chinese soups with bok choy, onions and chicken.

There's no way I'd be able to eat that soup because of the sheer grossness of swallowing a worm that crawled out of a radish. But if you're tougher than I am, there's no need to toss it because of saftey issues. Just bring the soup to a boil and you'll be fine.

Ew, that's awful. I would for sure be complaining about that. I wouldn't eat the soup. I wouldn't be able to get past what I saw.

I think many of us who have not lived our parents' lives growing up where food might be scarce or expensive and maybe have several siblings fail to realize that our folks would just get the radishes out, strain the soup as a second step and still serve it!
But I agree, if I know that the radishes were in the soup with the extra protein, I would pass on eating the soup. It's an individual decision.
