July 17, 2014 2:07PM EDT GRABOVO, Ukraine -- Ukraine said a passenger plane carrying 295 people was shot down Thursday as it flew over the country, and both the government and the pro-Russia separatists fighting in the region denied any responsibility for downing the plane.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called the downing an act of terrorism and called for an international investigation into the crash.
The village of Grabovo is currently under the control of the separatists and the area has seen severe fighting between the two sides in recent days.
Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it received notification from Ukrainian aviation authorities that it had lost contact with flight MH17 at 1415 GMT some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Tamak waypoint, approximately 50 km (30 miles) from the Russia-Ukraine border.

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres (33,000 feet). He said it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher, which can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 metres (72,000 feet).

Poroshenko said his country's armed forces didn't shoot at any airborne targets.
"We do not exclude that this plane was shot down, and we stress that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not take action against any airborne targets," he said. "We are sure that those who are guilty in this tragedy will be held responsible."
Separatist leader Andrei Purgin told The Associated Press that he was certain that Ukrainian troops had shot the plane down but gave no explanation or proof for his statement.
Purgin said he did not know whether rebel forces owned Buk missile launchers, but said even if they did, they had no fighters capable of operating it.
A launcher similar to the Buk missile system was seen by Associated Press journalists earlier Thursday near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne, which is held by the rebels

oh I am sure they will uncover who was responsible for shooting down this passenger plane. Such pain for Malaysian families to deal with. Another tragedy so soon after that last plane went missing.

Today, approximately at 16.20 (Kyiv time) a Malaysia Airlines aircraft Boeing 777, flight MH17 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala-Lumpur has vanished off radars.

In recent days, this has become the third tragic accident following AN-26 and SU-25 aircrafts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces downed from the Russian territory. We do not exclude that this aircraft was also attacked and emphasize that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have not taken any actions to strike targets in the air.

On behalf of Ukraine, President Petro Poroshenko expresses the deepest and the most sincere condolences to families and friends of those who died in this terrible tragedy.

All possible search-and-rescue operations are being carrying out.

President Poroshenko addressed the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to set up an Emergency State Commission for the thorough investigation of this tragedy.

The President has invited the ICAO and other international experts including Dutch and Malaysian representatives to join the investigation efforts.

We are confident that those responsible for this tragedy will be brought to justice.

Italy's Alitalia has joined the growing list of airlines to announce it is diverting flights away from eastern Ukraine in the wake of the incident. The list also includes: Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, Russia's Aeroflot, Turkish Airlines.

    19:28:
Flight recorders have been found at the crash site, Konstantin Knyrik, a spokesman for the pro-Russian rebels, has told Interfax news agency. Earlier reports quoted rebels as saying they intended to send the flight recorders to Moscow for checking.

    19:35:
The director of Eurocontrol, which controls air traffic across Europe, says that Ukrainian airspace has now been closed after reports of the crash. Speaking to Radio 5 Live, Tytgat Luc said there were four aircraft flying in the same area at the same time that the crash occurred, but that they continued their flights.

(Reuters) - Russia asked Kiev on Thursday for permission to help with rescue work in eastern Ukraine after a Malaysian passenger airliner was brought down there, the Emergencies Ministry said.

"The Russian emergency services sent an official request to our Ukrainian colleagues to carry out joint work at the crash site of a Boeing (plane) on Ukrainian territory," Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov told Russia's RIA news agency.

Was MH17 flying through war-zone to save fuel?

Air accident investigators are planning to inspect the proposed flight plan lodged by pilots on board Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 to see if they flew over a warzone to save fuel.
The 17-year-old jet was shot down over eastern Ukraine despite British, European and US commercial aircraft being warned against using the airspace since April.
One of the major questions is whether the Malaysian flight crew received the warning from flight safety officials about the risk to safety.
One aviation expert revealed: 'Malaysia Airlines, like a number of other carriers, have been continuing to use it because it is a shorter route, which means less fuel and therefore less money.'
The jet was travelling at 33,000 feet at 490 knots when it disappeared from radar screens while approaching the Russian border.

Sen McCain: There will be hell to pay if Russia shot down MH17

Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) declared on Thursday there would be "incredible repercussions" if Russian forces or pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine shot down the Malaysian flight that crashed earlier in the day. In an appearance on MSNBC shortly after news of the crash broke, McCain stressed it was too early to come to definite conclusions. However, he pointed out Ukrainian aircraft have previously been shot down in recent days and "mistaken identification" of the Malaysian plane could be "part of a pattern" that demands a powerful reaction from the United States.

No further information is available at this time. Friends and relatives in Canada seeking information on Canadian citizens known to be on board Flight MH17 should contact DFATD's Emergency Watch and Response Centre by calling 1 800 387-3124, or by sending an email to [email protected]."

"Horrified by reports of a Malaysian Airlines plane crashing near the #Ukraine/#Russia border," Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird tweeted. "We are following the situation very closely."

    • 20:13:

The European Cockpit Association, which represents European pilot associations, says in a statement that the route flown by the plane is the most common route for flights from Europe to South East Asia.
"Our first thoughts go to the relatives and friends of the 290 passengers and of the 15 crew members and colleagues on board of the Malaysian flight MH17," the statement says.

    • 20:00:

The International Air Transport Association says the plane appeared to be flying through ordinary airspace when it crashed. "Based on the information currently available, it is believed that the airspace that the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions," the association said in a statement.

Malaysia Airlines announces that all of its European flights will be 'taking alternative routes avoiding the usual route,' after the downing of Flight MH17.

The statement reads: "With immediate effect, all European flights operated by Malaysia Airlines will be taking alternative routes avoiding the usual route.

"Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was on a scheduled flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur went down in eastern Ukraine. Malaysia Airlines confirms that the aircraft did not make a distress call.

"The usual flight route was earlier declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. International Air Transportation Association has stated that the airspace the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions.

"As opposed to the earlier statement, the flight was carrying a total number of 298 people – comprising 283 passengers including three infants of various nationalities and 15 crew of Malaysian nationality. Some of the nationalities of the passengers are yet to be determined."
