I dated a few fellows that I met online when it was "avant guard" - my friends thought I was CRAZY - but I was always careful to meet in a public place. Had a few nice dates but no sparks that lasted.
Now - I marry people as a profession and many of the couples have met online.

Oh yes we both know what each other looks and sounds like. We started off chatting through text back and forth for awhile before we started talking over skype and video chatting. And thanks!! I think quite a number of people have thought I was nuts already but come on! In this day and age, meeting online is certainly not unheard of!

Simular situation. I travel often mostly to states. NO time to meet women and when I do, they dislike my work schedule. Never met someone online in person, I'm afraid they won't be as carefree and fun in real life. I'm so lucky to be an un-nagged male. GOod luck!

Back then you didn't even have to have a photo on your profile. When we met for the first time in person, we were meeting at a coffee shop and really all I had was a physical description. And I knew he was tall. How do you find the tall guy in the coffee shop when everyone is sitting down? I remember seeing a 40-something guy with a ponytail who was kind of smiling at me and thinking, "Please don't let that be him," (understand that I was 20-something at the time and 40-something was a bit out of my range!). Fortunately it was NOT him, and he eventually stood up so I found him.

Most girls simply ignore my messages. The few who do respond to my initial message start ignoring me once I ask them on a date. The ratio of men to women is too high so most women get inundated with messages from guys and end up ignoring most guys.

I met mine on a forum so I wasn't really looking. I never tried a dating site. Maybe just join forums that meet your interest and you will come across someone just like you
